i bought this auratus from petsmart over a year ago when i first joined the site, he was a "assorted cichlid". this single fish is the meanest fish ive seen in my life. hes bitten me a few times, and he cannot get along with any other fish without trying to kill it.

i thought about giving him away a few times, buti didnt want to dump him as someone else's problem, so ive kept him in solitary in a 10g. i threw in some old cabomba and java moss, and its exploded in growth so much that it looks like a swamp. lol

he loves weaving around. he is one CRANKY fish though, i tried him in a tank with other mbuna that had their own territory, and he picked fights instantly.

looks like sooner he will get entangled in this swamp. man thats a lot of plant growth in there.

I have 3 in our 55g. Got them before I knew what they were. They are starting to get some size to them now and I'm in a hurry to get them into another tank before they start causing trouble...or worse. So far they all 3 look like females but maybe they aren't big enough to show male coloration yet.
I tried live plants in our tank and the fish destroyed them. Guess your auratus is a real jungle african warior lol.
