My parents picked up some driftwood while in Florida. I haven't taken a look at it yet to it might just be for my yard or decorations around the house. But if i do decide it would look cool in the tank and boil it or bake it will that make it safe for a FW tank? Any options to make it safe?

My dads a big freshwater fisher down there so if he picked it up while fishing it might not even be from the ocean. But i'm guessing my mom picked it up while walking the beach or something.

Boil it to get rid of any possible disease or anything bad for your fish. Then let it soak for about a week to get all the salinity out of the wood.

I agree with travie on this...
I added river wood to my tank and just poured boiling water over it, and popped it in the tank. (it came from a fast flowing clean river) but it sounds like you aren't sure where your wood came from?
baking it could pose a fire hazard, and I have heard that boiling it will work well, and will help reduce the tannins that leach into your water, but I didn't find that necessary in my case... i like the tannins, and It does lower the ph just a tiny bit...
I hope this helps...

It will probably take more than week of soaking to get rid of any salt in the wood. It would all depend on how long it had been in the salt water.
