Today ,seeing as how it was nice out I decided to do a half water change in my pond.I unhooked the line to the water boy ornament and put my garden hose in the pond.I normally do it this way by having the same amount of water going in as is going out.I went to supper in the house and forgot all about it.About an hour later I looked out the window and saw my shed door was open so I went out to close it.Then I remembered! There was only 3 inches of water in the bottom for almost a dozen 5-8 " fish.Well anyway I got water back in there, now I'm hoping that the 90% wc I did does not shock them terribly.

my concern is ph shock. That water was right nasty. This time of year I slowly change there water over the way I wantd to do today, normally 10-15% at a time.My tap water is 7.3 the pond water is closer to 8.

That's a fairly big jump - how slowly did you add the fresh water?

not slowly enough.Ill let everyone know tomarrow how it works out.I have found that pond fish are not nearly as sensitive as others. This has happened to my aunts pond twice. She didnt lose any but she did get an algae bloom.

Update, all is well!I counted noses this afternoon and they are all there goofy selves.Kind of makes ya wonder a bit about big ph swings being so detrimental ,huh?

I suppose it also depends on the size of the fish...I'm guessing the bigger fish can tolerate such incidents much better than small ones...

Glad they're all doing well!:c3:

thats probably true. Also, outdoor pond fish have a very high tolerance for off kilter water.Ive been amazed many times what they can live through. Thanks for the well wishes everyone, and remember, always leave a door open:c12:

I reckon too that often good amounts of chemicals accumulate in the detritis at the bottom of ponds, which helps buffer the fish against big swings.

THose chemcials may not accumulate as much in rivers or streams, as the water is always moving. But in ponds, it's locked in.

Of course, I may just be happily theorising complete nonsense! :c12:

I've done that with my fish tanks on purpose. Taken the water right down to zip and it's been OK. Don't know on your tho with the change in temp

Glad your fish is all right. What makes me wonder is when people dont cycle their tanks at all do 100% water changes when the water starts looking bad so eveery couple of months and there fish live fine!
