Pretty much ever since I got him my male Jack Dempsey has been staying in a cave too small for him. He used to hang out with the female a lot but nows hes spending 75% of the day just lying in the cave on an angle. Both Jack Dempseys have always been skittish. He comes out to eat whenever I feed them. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Jack Dempseys are generally shy and skittish fish. They often hide in dark corners or caves during the day to hide themselves from other predators that may lurk. It is very very common for them to be very skittish all of the time. I have had Jack Dempseys for years that would hide all day. They are not used to someone being right in there face all day and probably view you as a predator....

Good to know that it's normal, they're both very beautiful fish and I wouldn't want them to be sick.

How about a flower pot so he had some more room?

I don't really have any room in my tank for a flowerpot because of the huge piece of driftwood but there are 2 other hiding spots he just chooses not to go to.

My jack dempsey did the same thing after losing a fight to a similar sized convict.A week later my dempsey grew enough where could woup the convict. After that he stills rules the tank.Just let him settle in and get big enough where he can rule the tank.At least that was my case. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!!!
