Hi,

I am new to tropicals and am setting up a 55 gal community tank. I have a rough idea of what I would like in the tank
Swordtails - 1 male 3 female
Danios - 6-10
Rainbowfish - 6 (not sure which breed, would like blue but depends what I can get)
Gourami - 4 (probably Honey, Dwarf or 3 spot)
Corydoras - 4

Are there any major compatability problems with these fish?

Also, what plants would you recommend?

Thanks thumbs2:

Only with the 3-spot which you will definately not want with these fish. They can and usually are highly aggressive.

Danios are a good starting fish for the cycling process.

That sounds like a nice size tank for the group you are considering....and it will also provide color, activity and life at all levels. I can personally tell you that "generally" all of the above (with the exception of rainbows...never had them) should get along just fine. I have a 64 that currently has 1 dwarf, 1 honey, 5 sparkling gourami....2 orange laser cory and has in the past also held danios and platies with no problems. But always remember, you may occasionally get a "rogue" from any species who just won't work well no matter what.
Good luck with your tank...keep us updated as you go so we can share in your success.
By the way....do you plan on cycling with or without fish?

Thanks for the replies.

I was planning on cycling without fish, giving the tank 3-4 weeks then introducing the danios.

Fishless cycling would be the best way to go but danio's are also used as a cycling fish. For some reason, they seem to be able to handle the water changes. Good luck getting your new tank going.

yeah, danios are very hardy fish!

I'm thinking about tetras rather than danios as a schooling fish. Would this make much difference?

Both fish are nice and you should be able to have both. Danio's remain at the top of the tank and tetra's in the middle.
