I have read in my 600 pages fish book that some fish like lettuce and spinach. How true is that and what can it do to fish?

most bottom feeders (plecostomas etc..) rely on lettuce and spinach to thrive once the algae runs out. as far as what it will do to them, can you elaborate on this? i'm not really sure i understand that. -jeff

Some fish like vegetable matter. I add Romaine lettuce (not iceberg) spinach leaves, parsley, green beans, zucchini (a favorite), a banana slice, etc. Silver Dollars, gourami's and loaches love this stuff. I've tried peas but had no luck with those.

Don't give them canned veggies. All the nutrition is gone from those. Fresh spinach leaves, frozen peas and frozen green beans that have been blanched and smashed open with your fingers. I slice zucchini, boil it about 1 minute so it's softer and add a couple slices to the tank. Put the rest in a zip lock bag in the freezer. All fish eat this stuff so check our your species and see if they like it.
