View Full Version : Fish that will eat guppy fry?

I am in desperate need of a fish that will help control my guppy fry population. Our guppies are currently in our 55 gallon community tank with zebra danios, neon tetras, corys and a bristlenose. I was counting on the fry population being somewhat under control with these fish, but lots of our fry are surviving. We are cycling a 30 gallon now that will be the new guppy home (our danios have recently become fin nippers). I'd like to get a couple "centerpiece fish" that will help the fry experience uh, natural selection, without terrorizing the adults.

Suggestions?

2 bumblebee catfish would be awesome. they are nocturnal, but are fry eaters. they get 3" max

I recently had the same problem and tried to take CP's advice about the catfish. I couldn't find any though, so I went with a couple of black paradise fish. I had about 40 week old fry and within three days all I had left were my 6 week olds and my two adult males. They really don't bother any thing in my tank. No fin nipping or nasty chasing. They do chase each other around though since they are both males. They are really cool fish.

Yeah you can go with a catfish or clown killies seem to eat things smaller than them from my experience lol....

Only problem w/catfish is the neons will soon go the same way as the guppy fry. It's a fine line to find just the perfect predator for a community tank. You may be better off keeping something else in another tank, and moving the excess fish into the tank to be more selectively consumed.

Also, be wary of the species of bumblebee catfish you get. There are 3-5 that are reffered to as such, and i believe 2 of them are brackish.

Our existing neons, danios, corys and bristlenose are staying in the 55. We only plan to move the guppies to the 30. So we could add whatever fish or combination of fish makes sense to keep the fry population down, as long as they are not apt to go after the adults.

Thanks for the advice so far - please keep the suggestions coming!

the bumblebees will only eat small fry, no adults.

bumblebees are great fry eaters, but you wont see them much. a year ago i bought one, and after i couldnt find him a few days after i thought he was dead, 2 weeks ago when i transfered the fish from my 20g high to 90g i found him alive

Everything eats guppy fry!

I just let them do their thing and any fry that can't make it into hiding are eaten up, usually by my rams and platies.
