I found a piece of driftwood on a riverbank. It was very dry when I found it. I've had it sitting around for a few weeks. Is it safe to polyurethane it and put it into an aquarium?

No. polyurethane is not to be used in water. You can use a resin but that stuff is expensive. Just attach it to a piece of slate with a stainless screw and be done with it.
