I have one red flame dwarf gourami in a 5 gal hex tank. If the one inch per gal rule is true then I should have 2.5 in of fish left, correct? Right now I'm thinking barb (black ruby or tiger) or another small gourami (dwarf or honey). I've also heard they do well with loaches and mollies. I know gourami are carnivores so I'm also wondering how they handle snails. If anyone has experience with this species or advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can't due too much fish-wise in that small of tank... I wouldn't get another gourami in that small of tank. Barbs need to be in groups. Maybe three pygmy cories or some shrimp would work.

Edit: You have a very good-looking, healthy gourami there.

Very nice gourami. I wouldn't get any more gouramis as they can get aggressive if you get 2 males. Barbs need to be in a school of atleast 6 so thats out. I would do like Travie said. Either 3-5 pygmy/dwarf corys. Or a few shrimp.

good looking fish! i would say maybe a few small teras maybe four tetras personally i have x-rays living with my neon blue dwarf, and i love them but im under the constraints of a smaller tank too and they get along great.

oh one more thing when i was deciding on fish for my tank i was told that tiger barbs can be "fin nippers" if they arent kept in schools and with a tank that small it would get cramped with six.

the one inch per fish dosnt apply to all fish it only applys to small fish, so gouramis would not follow under that rule, if you want tho I would get another gourami, you can keep two of them without breaking the overstock and they do better in pairs

Two gouramis wouldn't have anywhere to hide if one or both becomes aggressive and territorial. A few ghost shrimp is your best option.

two males will fight, and a male will pick on the female, the female will need some where to be able to get away from the male at time..

that tank is to small for two dwarfs. Dwarfs will also eat cherry shrimp. you can do a cory cat and snails. but thats about it for a tank that size with a dwarf in it..

In 5 gallon tank all fish apply to inch per gallon rule except maybe shrimp. And it applies more for big fish then it does for small fish.
