Another fish I'd like to have. Hope you enjoy him. Oscars sure are a popular fish. Do you have him with others or is he alone?

My oscar used to lay on his side sometimes playing dead too almost completly flat. It scared me too but he rarely does it anymore. I cant wait till he is about 12''.

Oscars don't talk back, get into drugs or steal your chocolate. Best to have Oscars.

I was at the store today getting some gravel and I saw the most amazing oscar. He was a tiger that was black and silver, but had swirls instead of stripes. GORGEOUS!! Hope you enjoy yours Demon.

Hi there,
I've got an oscar who is prob 1.5 years old. It is absolutely beautiful. I'm not sure but it's got a small'ish hole above it's nostral - would this be hole in the head? It's not getting bigger and there's no slime or anything coming out of it. If it is, how do i get rid of it??

Severus

It could very well be HITH. There is no 100% guaranteed way to cure HITH, but you can sure try before it gets any worse. With some stress coat, very frequent water changes, a little salt. How are your water parameters..? Demonshark- most Oscars "sulk" when they get put into a new habitat or things are changed. It is really quite funny, and completly harmless

He is still doing it and driving me crazy lol

I was reading just today that parrot fish, severums and oscars will do that hiding thing for up to 2 weeks. Give him some time. Maybe leave the light off for a bit.

Severus

Yea, he probably isnt used to his new surroundings yet

keep your eyes out for head rot. oscars contract this disease easily.

Severus

With proper maintenance and cleaning, HITH shouldnt be a problem

Oscars are really nice fish... and really easy to take care of... when i moved outta town for about 3 monthes, my brother didn't take care of my oscar very well... lets just say, i was near tears when i came home and the water was so murky i couldn't see him.... but after cleaning the water, tank, and filter, everything was fine.... just to show you how tough of a fish they are... but dont let somethign like that happen and good luck!

Thanks guys,
That's actually my oscar in my avatar pic - he's a an awesome fish so i don't want to loose him. A pet store recently told me giving them too much protein may be the cause, has anyone got any thoughts on this? I've given him a lot of frozen bloodworm & cichlid mixes, pellets and flake. It's only a really tiny hole but I'm keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get worse.

DemonShark

So what should I do??

10-31-2006, 02:24 AM
giving him time is always a good thing, and hes prolly eating just not when ur around... some fish dont eat when ur watching them... my uncles parannahs are known to do this, and maybe some oscars are the same

DemonShark

He's probably out and about at night when the lights are off.

Fish can be so odd. Four days ago I decided to change the gravel in my 20 gallon that houses Hi-Fin white tetra's and neons. I just removed the gravel and cleaned the tank and tossed the plants in to float until I could get to the store to buy new gravel. Ya Know, these fish would not eat the 3 days there was nothing in their tank. The food just layed on the bottom. Last night I added new gravel and they are eating like hogs today again.

They just need to get used to their environment but yours should be coming around by now. Do you have the light on too much you think?

DemonShark

No I dont have too much light

Does anyone have any ideas whether what I've fed my oscar would cause HITH? I've been feeding him bloodworm, sometimes frozen beef, pellets, flake & shrimp pellets. A pet store told me sometimes protein was the cause, but he's eaten the same mix for over a year. Any thoughts greatly appreciated as I don't want to loose him.

To Juannie: it might be protein(too much) or it could be rotten fish food. I read an article on rotten fish food which will create hole in the head.

To everyone else: My oscar has come out and I got to see him more!He has a huge mouth and was eating like a pig! His one fin looks smaller than the other so I think he might have fin rot when I got him. Ill try to get pics in

Thanks DemonShark - that's helpful. Sounds like your new friend is finally coming out to play that's unreal. Hope his fin heals.
