If in dout fill a buket up with tank water put your wood in then do a test after 24h and then you will know!

Test for what, though?

Well it can bring up all sorts depending on the wood, ive had wood that brings the ph up and had wood that makes the water in the bucket go all cloudy so i think its a good idea to use a bucket of tank water first so you dont have this problem in the tank!

It is more than likely safe. I soaked my wood in a strong solution of table salt in a trash can for several days to kill any bugs living in it.

It will never sink for you, tho, and you may have to attach it to slate to keep it down.

I have seen petrified wood for sale at several lfs in the past and used to use it in a couple of tanks years ago, i never had any issues with it.

petrified wood is essentially rock, if you put vinegar on it and it bubbles then it is unsafe for the aquarium. other then that it should be fine. and it will sink.
