My 75 gallon is medium-ly planted with plastic plants and there is a lot of wood. It looks a lot like the Amazon. What fish should I get that come from planted areas and are not the norm, like tetras, angels, barbs, cories, and the like?

What's your definition of normal? :27:
You could get some tetras and cories, but get some rare varieties instead of the common neons and bronze.

Normal I mean the stuff everybody gets. Are there any big fish (fish like oscars) that actually come from the planted areas of the amazon? I think they just come from the woody and rocky areas, don't they?

There are a bunch of rare tetras and cories that you wouldn't find in many tanks.
Copella arnoldi comes from the lower amazon region I believe, and you don't see many of those. Same with agassizi and guapore cories.

I'm not sure if you understood, but I DON'T want things like tetras and cories. Sorry if I made it a little confusing. I think it might have seemed like I want rare tetras, but I don't want them at all.

How about some Nannacara (there are different types)? or Lyretailed Checkerboard Cichlid?
AEQUIDENS DORSIGERA are also nice as well as LAETACARA CURVICEPS ...
Have a look at the different AEQUIDENS... there are lot's of pretty ones
And one of my favorites MESONAUTA FESTIVUS :18:
Most L numbers also hail from here so some nice unusual catfish should not be a problem

Are there any catfish that are NOT nocturnal?

Pictus catfish. I think.
Yu could get some of the rare color varieties of pencilfish. I saw some really rare ones with these weird spots the other day but they were lik 11$ each.

Pictus are very much night fish (hardly ever see mine)... a lot of L numbers are 'nocturnal' but adapt very quickly to day
Do you mean the Nannostomus Espei Ed? Nannostomus mortenthaleri are beautiful...

I think it was the Epsei. I really wanted them but they are a bit out of my price range. Are they common over there.
Fishalicious

No I don't think they are common anywhere - here they cost around 11-12 bucks as well... I am currently trying to breed them to share among friends :19:

I was looking in my book and I like pearl cichlids. i read on the net that cichlid owners commonly use pencilfish as dithers. myabe I could have 1 pleco of some sort, 1 pearl cichlid and 8-12 pencilfish?

So the pearl cichlid (11") wont eat the beckfords pencilfish (3")? And what is a good common pleco (not the species, I mean readily available) that I can get besides common and bristlenose?

Ooooh, the pearl cichlid is a geophagine. This changes everything, well not really. I dont prticularly like the look of it but there are alot of other Geophagines. I would get like 4 or 6. But I think they would eat any fish that would fit it their mouth.

Hmmm, I just liked the blue. Is there any cichlid (not dwarf) that is bigger and if from the amazon? And doesn't mess with my gravel? I really like the personality of my gourami and I really want a cichlid like that.

What about a severum?
shockshockshad
03-22-2008, 01:30 PM
Will the severum eat the pencilfish?
Fishalicious
03-22-2008, 01:41 PM
I thought you were looking for something 'different' anyhow... the severum will eat most nannostomus as most stay pretty small... there are a few larger ones which may be suitable though

Then what is a "different" south american cichlid that gets large and has a great personality? And what are some larger pencilfish?

Sorry about that, you said different fish and I thought you just meant rare tetras and stuff.
Pencil fish are very nice, I have a school as dithers in my blue ram tank.
I wouldn't try to put any big cichlids with them however, as most will eat the small pencil fish.
You could look at some of the tanganyika and geophagus species. There are many rare varieties that wouldn't eat your pencils.
However, if you have your heart set on SAs, Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, Laetacara curviceps, and Mesonauta festivus will maybe leave your pencils alone, but I think it would be better to go for some dwarf cichlids.

I don't have to get the pencilfish. i just really want the SA cichlid. Maybe the whole tank will be with them? Like 1 bigger fish, and a couple medium fish? I just REALLY want a fish with personality.

In another thread, I wanted an oscar. I found out that one green terror (an AEQUIDENS species) and one oscar will live in a 75 gallon. Will that work?
EDIT: Instead of the oscar, what about a blue acara?
shockshockshad
03-22-2008, 08:36 PM
Will a blue acara and a green terror fight?

Are there any catfish that are NOT nocturnal?
Yes, the polka dot pictus catfish are super active all day long and they're beautiful with long sleek shiny silver bodies with black spots oll over them. I would post a picture of my babies, if I had a digital camera, which I don't, sorry...
