Hi everyone...
I had a 10g hanging around collecting dust and decided to set it up in the bedroom tonight.
I am going for the tacky look... fake plants green gravel strange decor.
so far it has the ever so budget, construction paper background.
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Let me know what you think.. and please offer suggestions to help me make this tank as tacky as can be. We can worry about stocking later:hmm3grin2orange:6704
This tank is NOT a Joke... I am really doing it right now!
When I have a huge list of ideas, I am going to get all the stuff and pack it into the little ten gallon while it is cycling and then start another thread about what to put in it (probably live bearers)
At the end I will donate all of my points to the givers of the ideas that I actually use!

What about one of those plastic sharks or diver helmets that opens up to release a bubble every second or so?
Ark6ie
03-21-2008, 06:47 AM
you NEED one of those plastic "no fishing" signs and i dont know if you have these over there but on of those fake rock/stack/ cliff decorations painted in fluro pink lol

I almost forgot about the betta bling i think it's called.. the little plastic cubes that sort of look like ice cubes?
Gotta love the green gravel with the pink background .... thumbs2:
I'm wondering if we should set up an extra TOTM "Clown Puke" edition contest ... :hmm3grin2orange:
No offence with that, all in good fun! As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters!
I'm thinking some Platys will go great in that tank.

heeheheheh
the shark diver thing sounds awesome too.
I will probably have to forgo air powered stuff. the airpump will be too loud in the bedroom (drives my wife nuts)
keep em rolling..... I am going to deck this tank out!:hmm3grin2orange:

no offense taken!
this is what I am going for here. to make the most atrocious tacky wild tank possible.
I have to figure out where to get betta bling..
Maybe I should arrange some plastic army men in battle formations, and get a floating airplane too!
When my wife comes home tomorrow, she is going to think I went crazy while she was gone! serves her for leaving me alone for a night:c11:

As tacky as possible? Haha, this is the coolest tank idea ever. Seriously!
I don't want to offend anyone with the following items in their tank, but I find these tacky:
Neon colored fake plants
The ceramic "No fishing" or whatever signs from walmart
Any bright gravel (check)
Bubble walls
Fake corals (In fresh or salt)
Pretty much any fake stump or fake wood decoration (I have them, what a hypocrite, haha)
Pretty much any walmart decor (still a hypocrite)
Any bubble operated decoration
Probably more that I can't think of.

my daughter has a clam shell thing that you attach to an air pump and the shell fills up with bubbles, then the top half of the shell opens up to let the bubbles out. pretty tacky :11:

okay, so I will have to do the bubble thing, despite the noise an airpump makes...
I can probably run air line from another room actually!

OMG! I totally love the Royal Rumble idea! U can hav Rey Mysterio and Triple H and Big Show with little belts that cum with them strown around the tank!
The bakground could b a large WWE world champion belt *bliss* U could even hav the ring, so the fish can go under it!!!
```
Ummm, wat bout little doll bits and pieces, u know this little beds and highchairs in doll houses..? U could hav it setup as a bedroom, or living room or bathroom!
You could make your decorations out of leggos. Just grab a little bag of them at Wally World or something - and then make him a "mountain," a "coral," a "drift wood"...all in wacked-out colors. They'd probably all look the same, but that's the idea, right?
Neon colored boat. Has to have neon pink on it. I have one in my basement that belonged to my parents. I've never used, and don't plan on it until I want to go for the tacky look also.
03-21-2008, 07:10 PM
maybe I will do a neon lego boat background!
man, these are awesome ideas... I can't wait to put them in action and then take some pics... last night I added two floating glass critters, a turtle and a fish. they are bobbing around.... looking quite out of place... but that is the point!
I can't wait to see the reaction from my wife tonight when she sees how tacky it is!
my betta tank is pretty tacky
we let the kid pick the plants and gravel
he picked glow-in-the-dark plants and rainbow gravel :D
With all that green substrate, you could turn it into a golf course! A couple flags here and there, whatever you could find lol One of those wind up bathtub sharks would be pretty sweet swimmin back and forth lol
You should get one of those half baseballs that stick on the outside of car windows so it looks like they crashed through the windshield, also, they sell animal "crashers" that are half inside, half outside the aquarium.
HAHAHA! I thought people here might frown upon such bad taste, but the overwhelming response is that people like the idea...
Maybe we can have TTOTM Tacky Tank Of The Month as a future competition.... I love all the great ideas folks have come up with!
I am working on some of my own too, but they won't be revealed until I post pics of the final "decoration" scheme.
Well, we have a huge container of them in the basement somewhere. We used to play with them a lot. Even when I was in HS and my sister would come to visit from graduate school, we would build things (not all the time, but I can remember a couple occasions). Dorky, I know - but we had fun!!
Great point Arkie, hadn't thought bout that LOL
plastic cars would do good though :)
jphonger
03-23-2008, 08:02 AM
There are plenty of all plastic cars to be found!
I stumbled upon alot of really cool stuff at a discount warehouse sort of store...
I cant wait to get this finished and put some fish in! the fish will probably be really confused at first.. Keep in mind that if they don't seem to adjust to the surroundings, I will most certainly either change the decor, or return the fish.
I am all about being wacky, but ethical treatment of my aquatic buddies comes first... that said.. time to tacky this ten gallon out!:ezpi_wink1:
Im definitely on board w/ the tacky air bubble operated decoration, like the skeleton w/ the jug of rum that raises to his mouth like hes drinking it when it fills w/ air!
I saw something in PetSmart that I thought was kinda tacky but cool. It was what looked like a cat head skull, made out of like inert plastic resin or something. I thought it was kinda a neat idea. It was large enough that the fishies could swim in and out of its mouth and "hide out" in the open space in side of the skull. LOL! Almost like poetic justice! hahaha! Ok, please dont tell my cat I posted this, he would be really pissed at me! :hmm3grin2orange:
My 2.5 G Betta tank is done up in "tacky chic" replete w/ the ceramic "no fishing" sign and a couple of fake NEON plastic plants amongst a few real plants. It has blue and white gravel, with cobalt blue marbles sprinkled on top. =o). Ill try to get some pics of it up.
The tacky tank is...well tacky! LOL You did a great job. Boy, if I was a little kid that tank would be enough to get me interested in keeping fish. It is so colorful and fun. Congrats!!! :19:
Oh, I'm so jealous, I missed this thread. The pictures are tacktastic, what fun. I would totally have suggested Hello Kitty. And I think a TTOTM would be great.
As for fish, guppies, the more colorful the better. Good on you for starting this. :19:
thanks Anja,
unfortunately I don't have much room left, but I will definately keep a look out for some hello kitty stuff.
I will be putting some stickers and a porthole on the sides and front of the tank...
also.... I came up with a cool idea last night, but it will probably take a while to complete... I can't say what it is, but I will show you all when it is done!
it should be good if I can do it right...
This tank has turned out to be a really fun project, but It started to get a little expensive. I will be adding more stuff to it, but I am not going to go out and buy any more tacky stuff. (planning to raid my nephew's toy closet)
I am absolutely still open to suggestions, and if you have not received points from me for contributing ideas, let me know...
have a happy april fools day!
I've not seen anyone post the Atlantis "ruins" type decorations like Grecian ruins or the "broken" pots/urns etc...you're running out of room, but you could rotate the tacky decorations every month, just for fun. If we run a TTOM, you're bound to win with an ever changing theme.
I am actually not entirely sure all of what went in my tank is aquarium safe... there is the plastic pirate scene and the rubber fish and duck that I am questioning... all of this stuff is plastic... and kid safe, so I am probably fine...
I will be doing some research on different plastics to make sure that I don't have anything in there that will harm the occupants before I put them in.
I am not a fan of finding my little friends belly up...
I actually like the green gravel...lol...It's my favourite color, GREEN, that is :18: My 5g sick tank has "Wasabi green" gravel, which is very bright, believe me!!! As for gaudy decorations, I think is was Drumachine that said he has a "Pooping Skeleton" that is sitting down on a rock, or something and the air bubbles make him sit up a little and it looks like he's farting...Tooooo FUNNY...:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: Correction...I just found the post with the interesting skeleton...it was made by ZCciVic22 and not by Drumachine!
