Do they "flare" their fins more than usual when breeding or something? I'm not sure if "flare" is the word I'm looking for, but I'm not sure of another one. My danios have been doing this a lot - it's the fins right beside their heads - they look like vials or something. They don't have any stripes as their other fins do.

Did any of that make sense? lol I feel like I'm going around in circles, but it's hard to explain unless you see them. I'd try for a picture, but as we all know, danios are crazy and are not very photogenic.

<Bump>

I only have one in my 75g, so i dont see much behavior from him/her. But i know some fish flare when they get threatened/mad, so maybe that's it?

Somebody's gotta know this one. . .

Im pretty sure the fins right near the gills are used to aid breathing, so maybe u should check out ur other fish, and ur lvls? If it is behavioral, it sounds like ur 10g is a little overstocked, maybe thats it? Overstocking can create too much ammonia too so defenitly check those lvls

Didn't even think about that. Thanks! I'll check everything out.

Just tested my water. NitrItes and Ammonia were both at 0, where they should be. NitrAtes were a little higher - about 20. I'll be doing my water change soon.

Could the NitrAtes be causing them to flare their fins too? I usually try to keep it around 0

fins have nothing to do with breathing, most likely posturing/breeding displays

Good! That makes me feel a lot better!!

Maybe they're breeding. That'd be an interesting adventure.

I had long finned danio's but not the zebra's. The zebra's did strip them of their fins, tho. I would not mix the long fins with other types.

I only have long fins in the tank. I was just wondering why they were flaring their fins so much.

Danios breed ridiculously easy. They probably already are laying eggs in your tank.

Just a side note ellen, 20ppm nitrates is not poisonous, especially for the ever-so-hardy zebra danios.:1:

My female long fin flares them when the shortfin male gets too 'fiesty' lol

you wouldn't see the eggs. Waaay to small. I couldnt see my cherry barb fry eggs in a bare bottom tank!! Most Eggs and Fry will get eaten before u see them. I couldn't see my cherry fry for a week after being laid. Occasionly you could find a fry especially in your java moss! Keep your eyes peeled to see if your females get slimmer.

Well, I also have 2 otos, a gourami, and a few ghost shrimp in the tank. Want to make sure everybody is comfy!!

Wow - very interesting!! I don't even know which are females and which are males. I'll have to look that up.

Overtime the females will stick out. Very easy to sex. Females plump. Males Slim. The males will be chasing the females.

Okay. I've noticed plump ones - just didn't make the connection with the sexes. I'll have to pay more attention now.

Too bad they all look exactly alike at first glance. lol

Yeah lol. Just work out how many females you have and jus count em everynow and then if one has slimmed watch out for fry over the following week.

Will the fry get eaten? If the eggs survive, that is? I have a good bit of java moss, so if they can find their way there, they may have a chance of survival.

I think I have two males and four females - they're so fast though. It was hard to remember which one I had already "inspected."

I have seen your tank and you have a nice lot of java moss in there and that where the fry will be. When you look at my cherry barb fry tank you'll see about 5 fry swimming about and a big clumb of java moss. Come feeding time you'll see 20 out and about its hard to believe where they fit in that clump lol.

I have one, it seems to flare its fins a lot when its cool out, if that makes sense. I dont know how they tell, when its hot out my gourami turn's a pale orange, even though he is naturally blue...

Wow. I may have a heart attack if I see 20 danios come out of my java moss. lol A good heart attack though - if there ever was one.
