It turns out the top rim of my 12 gallon doesn't stay on, and it is right in front of the filter flow so water leaks through. I was wondering, maybe I could have it 1/3 full of water and have a land area with bog plants. For fish maybe some kuhli loaches. The substrate would be sand, and decor would be some java fern and moss. I have heard that the ferns can grow emerged. Can cryptocornes grow emerged? If so, which kinds are low light? (some are hi-light as far as I know)

So is this a good tank?

I would go with hermits or FBTs.

You could do that. For plants, get some bacopa. It grows right out of the water. Also try melon swords and umbrella plans. And yes, cryptocorynes wiill grow emersed.

I grew bacopa (mind you not very well) in a 5gal with 15w incadescent lighting. You should be abl to grwo crpts fine.

OH yeah, you for sure could grow anubias. It actually grows fast when not completely submerged.

Is 1 inch or less water enough for java fern and crypts to grow? And what is a good filter for only 3-4 inches of water?

Kuhlis need more hiding places than just plants. The sand is a good idea though. Maybe a piece of driftwood or rock will do well as a kuhli hiding place.
Overall, your tank seems like it will do fine.

I have MANY rocks with MANY crevices. Plus some wood. But my realy question is, is 1 inch of water enough for aquatic plants?
