Do to overstocking (hard to avoid with some livebearers) and different filter malfunctions I seem to be on an eternal nitrogen cycle. I do 2 or 3 water changes a week w/ a gravel vac and I treat the water w/ Prime because of our city's chloramine issues. Actually, I get nitrate and occasional ammonia and nitrite spikes now and then.

I don't mind hauling buckets, it's how I work out, but I wonder if some of those ammonia and nitrite/nitrate removing media actually work?

Any ideas? What has worked or not worked for you?

I add white ammonia crystals to extra media trays for my biowheels. I have a bunch of huge, messy fish, and they seem to help!

Hagen Aquaclear makes ammonia remover bags you can use to limit the ammonia. This in turn willl limit the nitrates and nitrites...

Zeolite works fairly well.
