We all know the importance of maintaining a constant temp in our tanks, I am curious to find out something.
What is the best thermomitor out there? Are they the glass ones, digital ones, the stick on kinds? What?

Digital, glass, and then lastly stick on. Every stick on that I put on a tank never worked.

Digital, glass, stick on.
On straight out quality, I say digital, but what I'm using them for determines what I end up using. On my 2 20 gallon tanks with just barbs, tetra's, glass catfish and what-not, I simply use glass. When I get my other 10gallon up and running to try to breed some Ghost shrimp, it's also going to get glass. My 75gallon Piranha tank also has a glass one.
What was going to be my Discus tank (and has since turned into my stingray tank) I wanted something that was very accurate, so I spent the money and got it a digital. My Bichir tank also has a digital.
We had 1 glass thermometer on each side of my 150gallon tank. Since it is 6' long and has a heater on each side, this allowed me to maintain better control of each heater. Unfortunatly, they keep breaking the glass ones, so it's going to get 2 digital thermometers, as will my 8' tank when it's running.

I use glass with both my tanks. I just experimented with the stick on.

The reason I am asking this question is this. I have had glass ones in the past. I had one in my 20gal tall, and one in my 37gal. I had found that there was a 5 degree difference between the two. I couldn't believe it! When I was running my tank at 80 degrees, it was actually closer to 85. I was like holy *&^%! That will not do.
So, I went and got a stick on one to see if that was any better. Seems half the time I can't read it, or it is "between" numbers and basically driving me batty.
I need to get a new thermomitor to go with my new stealth heater. I have literally no idea on what temp my tank is right now. I put my hand on the side of the tank, and go, well...it "feels" right, but I have no idea on what it is.
I've never used digitals, still skeptical about them, especially when the battery runs low.
The old fashioned mercury in a glass tube thermometers are no doubt, in my opinion, the most accurate and reliable you can buy. You may not be able to read a tenth of a degree like on a digital, but you don't need to anyways.

Most aren't made of murcury anymore, are they? Some type of chemical

Ususally with ethanol or kerosene that is injected with dye to make it easier to see. Just as accurate but safer ;)

all of my tanks have digital thermometers, that way no large fish can smash them and they take up little room

Ive always had the glass ones and if you keep it tight against the corner of the glass with to of them sucker things then the fish cant smash it.

My tank came with a digital. I had to keep turning my heater down until it couldn't go any farther. When I test the thermometer in boiling water, it wouldn't go over 75*. It was rated at 140*. So I'm skeptical about digitals. I'll sitck with the stick on and occasionally check with a glass...
I like the glass thermometres the best - but if the fish break them, then digital is the way to go...
The digital I've run into haven't been all that good...if you get a glass one, make sure (if it's a cheaper one) that the little paper that tells you the temperature is in the right spot...

I almost always use digital. If I don't have a digital the little glass hanging one is the next best option.
