I would suggest 2 things actually. First thing would be to follow the above advice. Then, you should find someone with a properly calibrated Refractometer and have them test the accuracy of your hydrometer. Many times float-arm hydrometers can be way off. Have the store test a sample of your water using their refractometer. Write down the reading and when you get home test your water with your hydrometer. Find out the difference between the 2 and note what it is. Then, when you test with your hydrometer, either add or subtract that difference to get a true reading. I found this out the hard way when I started my tank. My hydrometer was reading 1.025, but my LFS tested it at 1.030 using a refractometer. In order to get an accurate reading with my hydrometer I have to add 0.005 to the result. I have since invested in a refractometer of my own, it is far more accurate than a hydrometer. If you can swing it, I'd suggest getting picking one up. You can find a sufficient one for about $35-$45 online.

ditto LMAO

My hydrometer reads .002 lower than a refractometer.

Just do small water canges and add regular water. It will slowly pull down the salinity...

Definitely look at the needle on the hydrometer.
If there are even little air bubbles that means that it is giving a high reading. Don't be afraid to hit the thing and such to get the bubbles to release. I have tested my hydrometer with a calibrated refractometer and it is right on target. The only thing that throws it off is when there is bubbles on the needle.
If that doesn't work then yes your tank has a high SG and you need to add fresh water to it but do it slowly as a sudden change in SG can hurt your tank inhibitants.
