home depot 50lb gravel

i can get a 50 lb bag of river gravel at home depot...this is much much cheaper then paying 15 dollars a bag at the pet store...has anyone else tried this

I purchased 100lb of silcica sand for $9.95 and has looked after 3 large tanks so far. The only thing is I had to wash, wash, wash, wash and so on. It took forever to get it ready for the tanks but now it looks beautiful. Good luck. I only bought sand once from a pet shop and it took 2 - 20lb bags and cost 60.00 after that simple is the way to go, and I find looks very natural.

I've seen this river rock and it does look nice. I think you'd have to test it all in vinegar to make sure it passed the test and not raise your pH.

It will be fine as long as when you put vinegar on the rocks it doesn't fizz. I don't think it will though.

All i've ever used was Seachem Fluorite.....I guess i could have check the local stores for some alternate form of fluorite gravel but....maybe next time.

I never thought about silica sand, i have a palate for my sand blaster at home

The only thing I have found with homemade gravel is this. I used crushed granite and the sharp grains are very hard on corys' barbels.

I've used exactly this in my 150gal tank. Home Depot, 50lb bags of river rock. It is very, very dirty, so be sure to wash it thoroughly. It looks great! It doesn't have that super colorful finish the fish store's does, but it looks really nice. You can see it in the pix in my photo albums for the 150gal, and the 75gal Piranha tank

This seems like a great deal for someone who is setting up a pond, or a large aquarium.

I've used the Home Depot river rocks in one of my tanks and it looks great.....just wash it real well to remove any dirt and debris....(theres a ton of it).....I washed my in a old wooden gun crate I picked up at a gun show and a pressure washer....worked fine and the gravel came out nice -n-clean...

I could have saved myself an arm, a leg and my nose if I would have known about that(I have no clue what the guy wanted with my nose). I will have to remember this next time I go to set up a tank!!
