A good thing for hatchet fish is fruit flies. They love fruit flies. Also you need to feed them food that floats as they wont go to the bottom of the tank to eat. I would also try to make sure the food isn't too large.

Yeah definetly jumpers.. You can keep it tight by getting the plastic backing for glass if you use those. They stay small though so no little gaps lol...

I have 6 marble hatchets. I chose marble hatchets, as they are smaller than the silver ones.
Hatchets need a varied diet. One consisting in meaty foods. As mentioned above with fruitflies. I have to figure out a way to culture those without filling the house full of them.
I had fed mine a nest of pharoh ants...LOL, seems the little ants built a nest under my hob, and when I cleaned it, I saw the nest and wiped them into my tank. Needless to say, the hatchets made short work of them.
I feed the flake food as well, but they do live longer if they have some kind of meat in their diets.

Here ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) is a link about them. Also I have heard from somewhere that you can buy freeze dried fruit flies. I have personally never seen any but I heard somewhere (don't know how true it is) that you can buy them.

We brought home a bag of key limes once, and a TON of fruit flies came with it.
Get a mason jar, and make a small funnel out of paper, that will fit the opening of the jar. Put some fruit in the jar. Invert your funnel to make it look like a "V", and tape it inside the jar. The flies can get in, but are too stupid to figure out how to get out (for the most part).

Petsmart huh? I will have to check the local store. Being in florida, I don't think I should have a problem with finding fruitflies, just head over to an orange orchard, should be able to get a zillion of em.....LOL
I have 5 hatchetfish in my 20g. (4 silver and 1 common) They get along great with the other fish (but squabble with each other often) The only time I have had them jump is when I feed sometimes .... they attack the flakes with so much "gusto" that they sometimes break the surface. I have fed mine flakes, freeze dried as well as frozen bloodworms.

As everyone has mentioned they are jumpers. I found it's good to have floating plants. They will enjoy being under them. I have my silver hatchets in a plastic planted tank and have some live plant pieces (6-8inches) floating on half the tank.
