Hi everyone i just picked up a new acrylic 60g tank. It is set it up with a 110 aquaclear power filter, and a 300w heater. The dimensions are roughly 48"x15x18. I plan on setting it up for south american cichlids, and am just curious as to how many could comfortably live in there. As of now theres a GT, JD, and a red FH that are going into that tank. If there are adequate hiding spots could a blue lobster live in this tank?

thanks

p.s. I just set it up last night with conditioner, and some cycle assist stuff that I had on hand, how long am I looking before I am cycled? (fishless)

In a 60 gallon I think you are reaching your limit quickly with what you have, this is talking long term of course. Some would say your flowerhorn barely fits alone in that tank (fullsize).

How is the AC110 set up?

As far as your lobster, I am sure he would survive for a while, but he will be harassed all the time.

Is it 18" wide or 18" high?

It is 18" high

Im not sure on what your asking about the AC110, but its set up with the foam filter then carbon then biomax insert.

Lobster may get harassed... I'd cap it at that in the tank and grab another ac110 for the back.. Keep it nice and clean.... Pics pics pics :18:

Is there a preferred substrate for south american cichlids, or does rock and sand work the same

I use gravel that is small to keep the waste that the filters don't get on top of the gravel for vaccing.

SA's prefer all kinds of rocky terrain/gravel, with some flat/round rocks too, and some hiding spots are always nice. They probably will be just as good with sand but, with your filter you should probably stick with gravel as sand likes to break the Hang on filters very quickly if your not careful.
