Is fish-keeping just not as popular in Australia?

thats what im thinking, i know reefs arent too popular there because of coral prices.

EDIT- heres a example of a tank here

Hey Archie, check out the trading post, you can get some great ones off that, there was a 8ft x 2ft x 2ft on there the other day (and I'd get it but no room to put it at the moment lol) for $200!!!!!!!! Have a browse through that, ebay also sometimes has some big ones, people just don't know what to do with them. Trading post is good though.

You guys are right though, it just doesn't seem to be as popular here down under, the price of fish etc is usually heaps more (eg, we pay $11 for a bleeding heart tetra! and $100+ for a clown pleco) so it does put people off.
Don't know what your price of stuff for the reefs are Cocoa, the live rock I looked at the other day was $25/kg, they didn't have prices on the coral, so not sure about that, (dont' think I wanted to ask if they didn't have it labled! lol)

I think that the strict import laws and the great expense of shipping in Australia may be some of the reason why it is not as popular down under.

Yeah i have no clue what you would do in Australia. Craigs list only came up with 1 55gallon for $125.... but that was it.

I'd guess the paper or if you have garage sales down there.... i have no clue for you...

You could move to the U.S. then......

Google can be your friend! I typed in "aquarium supplies australia" and got many Aussie sites with tanks larger then 100g for sale.

I don't know where abouts in Australia you are, but I would assume that it's the same there as it is in Canada or anywhere else. If you live in a small remote town, finding things you want or need can be a challenge, but once you get into the bigger cities, the selection of choices grows.

My lfs sells 4 ft tanks for over $100, and i asked for a quote on a 4 ft tank with built in wet dry filter... the guy wanted $400 bucks!! what a rip! Australia must be in the fish keeping stone age! lol
