Ok...I have never owned a canister filter so...
Got the thing all set up (Marineland C Series 220), plugged it in and hit the prime button 2 times (like the instructions say). Water is just barely trickling into the canister and there is nothing returning to the tank.
I would think that on the initial start-up it might take a little longer for the thing to start running because the entire canister has to fill with water, but it sounds like it is full and it still isn't pumping water back into the tank.
I guess my question is, what is normal when you first start a new canister filter? Does it take a lot of effort to prime? Should I keep trying to push the prime button? Any info is appreciated:confused:

Hmmm..
Yeah, definitely sounds like a priming problem, but I'm not an expert on cannisters, by any means..
Hopefully someone more experienced chimes in here, soon..
Make sure the canister itself is completely full of water. Priming at that point should be fairly straight forward.

Hi There,
I too have a new cannister filter, well about a month old. Its an 'Aqua One CF-1200' If that means anything to you. I know for my one, i had to fill the whole canister with water first. If you have already done that, then you might find you will have to get the tube going in to the cannister, and shake it up and down to get the flow going, like you would a psyphon. Once that starts up, it should be okay. Keep in mind, I am going off my own experiences here, with a different filter.
Hope this helps you a little.

Are you planning to leave the HOB on there for a while? You don't want to remove the HOB right away, that's where most of your bacteria bed is right now. If you remove that then your tank is more than likely going to go through a short cycle.

Yes...phew... :) My HOB has been an issue for about 2 weeks now so I am really excited to be getting rid of it.
And, yes, I had planned on leaving the HOB on for a while...or as long as it will last anyways. It has been having problems so that is why I upgraded. I expect it isn't going to survive much longer. Anyway, I had planned on leaving it for about a week or so and then taking it out and dropping the biowheel in the water for about another week.

Cool, that will work. You'll love the canister. I have 3 of them and I love all of them. Then again, they are all Eheims, so what's not to love about them. LOL

I have a marineland canister too. I love it except for the way the hoses attach to the filter. You cant really tighten them up that good and I was shaking the canister to get air bubbles out one time and one of the hoses poped off. 4 gallons of water later(and only 2 mins) Im scrambling around to try to find as many rags as I could. Luckily their was no water damage to my house but I did say a few choice words that night.
Moral of the story is if your canister is shooting air out of the outtake then be careful when shaking up the canister.

:laugh1blue: Thanks for the advice! I think I got mine on pretty tight, but I know what you are talking about. I tightened them down, loosened them, and then re-tightened to make sure I had it right.
