a pair of kribs would try to protect fry, but 3 female kribs and 5 rams would work

GBR are my very favorite, they are beautiful with lots of personality, A pair of German blues, some tetras, and panda cories, make for a beautiful tank. Unless your looking for just dwarf cichlids.:)

The GBR could go with tiger barbs?

You don't have to limit yourself to dwarfs if you are getting a 30 gallon. There are many cichlids 6" and under that would make great specimins. I wanted to do a single african centerpiece for a tank for a while.

I have a single Rusty Cichlid (Iodotropheus sprengerae)... It is about half the size of all my other cichlids (of the same age) in my tank. According to some profiles I've read the max size is 4"... mine is about 2" So, maybe I have a smaller female? But, this fish is one of my favorites! The colors is so different... sometimes it looks rusty and somtimes it body turns a deep purple color. Temporment is awesome... He/she never bothers any other fish.
