I heard that they could do well without a friend any opinions?

A friend as in any other fish or another blue ram? I had mine by itself for a while in a community tank, and it coloured up nicely. I recently added another one, dont know the sex, and they sometimes swim around together.

It would be okay by itself, but it would be happier with others of its kind.
Should I get a male or female for my single male GBR?

They would be alot happier in a group however you could get away with just one...

If I were to get a single one it would probably be a male.
