View Full Version : Big Storm In Europe
As some of you may know, there was quite a storm workings it's way through Europe last night and today. Winds had gusts up to 222km/h and at least 11 people have died in Germany plus another 40 or so in other countries.
Luckily, the area where I am wasn't hit so hard. We went to Venlo in The Netherlands today for some shopping which was quite a bit windy, but not too bad.
Just glad I wasn't in Hamburg though, especially on this flight ....

.... all I can say is kudos to the Lufthansa pilots!

we had the winds and rain shoot through the uk last night and has done quite a bit of damadge in some areas,:1:
Sorry that the link isn't working, seems like the Lufthansa public relations department is putting in some overtime ... lol! There is also a video of an Air Berlin B737 that came in just before the Lufthansa A320, but it's been removed as well.
LiveLeak has a link that seems to be working (for now at least):

If that doesn't work, I added a photo as an attachment.

LOL! I'm not much for Venlo myself, but it's not even a 30 minute drive from where I am. We just went in to do some shopping. Next time around, maybe we'll make a mini AC meet. Nanaglen doesn't live too far off either and Fins_n_Fur is pretty close too.

Sorry, I forgot to add that the aircraft made it on the second attempt. There's also been a third video (not as dramatic) of a British Airways B757 added to YouTube but it's been removed as well. Wild day at Hamburg airport to say the least.

We should do something like that, I'll be here next year again for sure, maybe sooner, not sure yet. But let's stay in touch and go from there ... thumbs2:

I was in the Maastricht area about 11 months ago. It was really hot. We actually stayed in Vaals, at the Hotel Kastelbloom (I think?) for my Opa and Oma's 50th anniversary.
Didn't hear about the storm, though.

I'm not going to click on the video link LOL ...I have been on planes landing in high winds...it's not fun at all and as I rule I like flying. Yep, pretty windy yesterday...I live under one of the flight paths into Amsterdam Schiphol and usually I hear nothing, unless it's windy, then they seem to fly lower and faster--lots of screaming jet engines LOL I thank God that I'm on the ground LOL
We definitely should do a meet this year or next...when are you heading back? There's a big fish/aquarium expo show in Utrecht next weekend where I'm going to meet fishalicious (can't wait!).

I was going to say you must fly into Schiphol, lot's of great landings there thanks to the North Sea winds. I flew from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam about 10 years ago and we just about went off the side of the runway. I was mostly concerned about missing my connecting flight to Vancouver though...lol.
Personally, I love flying in bad weather, but thats most likely because I have my private pilots license so I know how much fun in can be up front at times.
I'm flying back on Wednesday already, so I guess I'll be missing the expo in Utrecht. If I would have know, I would have booked KLM and left on the weekend, that way I could have driven up to Schiphol and stopped off on the way in Utrecht.
I'll be coming back this way early next year for sure, maybe even this fall, not sure about that.
Hope you two have fun though!

Haha, yeah, I agree.
Heres a funny story.
I was flying back from Curacao (you Dutch out there know the place), connecting to Jamaica, and landing in Boston.
Well, in Jamaica, Air Jamaica overbooked our flight so my family had to be put in first class (terrible, I know.) Well anyways, after me and my brother polished off our 5th caviar and truffle oil hor'dourves (only joking... there was no truffle oil)(haha, no I'm joking, there was neither), some kid was in coach (haha, simple people in coach) puking up blood or something. So we had to do an emergency landing at JFK airport in NYC. So we had to descend into a ridiculously bumpy and turbulence filled thunderstorm, and we have to circle the airport 3 times. Meanwhile I'm thinking this is great fun. I say to my brother, whose iron grip is breaking the seat while he shakes, "Hey, you remember that movie 'Cast Away'?" He looks at me and tells me to shut up. Good times, good times.
