so usually i just empty the 10g down to about 3 or so inches of water (with the fish in there) take out the heater and filter and put the tank on my lap in a car...
wondering if this hasn't been very good for the fish or basically how you guys would move a small fish tank.
i have a 3g and a 10g.

i bought one of my 10g's used, and it came with a rasbora, betta, and SAE. i drained it 80% and put it in the back, worked well

since you dont have a huge tank draining most of the water is fine, really only tanks above 10g should be fully drained

I'd drain the tank down to just covering the gravel to keep the bacteria alive. Keep the media from the filter in tank water also.... Put the fish in containers and drive them.... How far do you gotta move.....??

yeah all of my fish are pretty hardy.
last time i moved the tank, i had a ram and he died within a week. i think it was to stressful for him

only a mile or two... i live in chicago
is it better to take the fish out of the tank while moving?

I'd take them out... Less chance of them bashing anything in the tank when the water sways....... Put them in a bag and blow air into them from your mouth.... I do that when moving fish from my brothers and cousins tanks...... Cover the bag with newspaper to reduce the light shock from going outside...... If it is only 1-2 miles yu should be able to get the tank back up within an hour.... drip acclimate them back into the tank once setup.... They may stress a little but should be okay.......

I would bag up the fish and place the bags in a styrofoam box, where it will stay dark and warm, for minimal stress, then you can drian close to 100% of the water if you so need to.
