Aquarium water always smells a bit dank, like peat moss. If yours is really smelly, then you need to do some cleaning. If your tank is already cycled, do gravel cleaning with a gravel vaccum and change out some of the water. You may also need to flush the filter out some and clean up the uplift tube. Gets pretty raunchy in there but only do these things is your tank has cycled and has been set up for awhile.

There really shouldn't be any smell except when rinsing out filter media or when you pull objects out of tank such as plants or decorations. A properly maintained tank really shouldn't have an ammonia smell. When cleaning though you will get a slight smell. Just mean the bacteria that adhears to the various objects is working.
