Hello,

I just got two used tanks, and I want to try my hand at something a little more challenging than a community tank. (My first tank still cycling). Thanks to jbeining75, I would like to try my hand at setting up a biotope. I think a Central american biotope for the platies that I have.

I've read all about substrates, lighting, plants and now I'm completely lost; does anyone have map? :ezpi_wink1:

I have the following equipment:

12G tank (that's what it took to fill it)
2-3 big pieces of driftwood (they look like stumps)
Penguin 100 HOB filter
Hood with two bulbs - rated at 100w type a
Hydor 100w heater

What would you recommend for bulbs? Should I replace?
What plants?
Substrate would be gravel to stone on top, should I use something like fluorite?

Stock: 6 platies from my main tank and adding a few more females to even out the numbers, if there is room.

Any other suggestions?

I think a CA biotype would have very little plants. Mostly rocks and driftwood.
