Hi there,

I thought it time to consider my fert shedule then realised I have no idea,

what should i start with?
what do i need?
when should I start etc?

All I used for my anubias in my last tank was a commercial plant food.

Regards Darren

I'm not exactly sure how many or what type of plants you have, so this may be overkill. Also keep in mind that along with fertilization your plants need a good source of light and Co2. I use ferts that cover plant's Micro nutrient and Macro nutrient needs. You can buy them from here:

http://www.bestaquariumregulator.com/ferts.html

Here's a link to some info on plant fertilization:

http://www.rexgrigg.com/ferts.htm

and finally for a dosing schedule I have started using this:

http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/water-parameters/21944-_dosing-regimes_.html (http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/water-parameters/21944-_dosing-regimes_.html)

It's a lot of info to digest, but it will get you on your way. This really goes beyond the typical ferts you would buy at a local fish store. But with this all of your bases will be covered.

Hope it helps!

Wow..

All that dosing 3x a week?

Is that for C02 supplemented tanks, I wonder?

Yup, when you do your 50% water change, it resets everything so you don't have to worry about nutrients building up. I've begun doing it this week and I'm already seeing my plants begin to pick up. And yes it is for Co2 supplemented tanks. In fact, with Co2 it becomes a necessity.

Well,Im unsure what plants you have so I dont know if what I use will be what you need or not but here goes.
All seachem products twice a week half suggested dose
nitrogen
pottasium
iron
flourish
Daily:
flourish excel 1.5 daily dose
weekly:acid buffer [I call it a fert because it also helps with co2 }

evry 3months flourish tabs and I have flourite substrate.

The ferts I get from Rex Grigg cost 14 bucks for all macros and all micros and they're supposed to last a year. Once you get them you can either dose them dry or make your own solutions.

depending on what plants you have and your lighting you may not need Co2 i don't use it and my plants are healthy.
i think i am going to only dose my ferts when i do WC.
i was doing little doses daily but i think it was overkill cos now i have a ton of green spot algae.

I just started using them this week and they're usually highly recommended on other plant forums I have been to. They're just straight up agricultural grade. I just started dry dosing this week and I definitely see a difference in my plants. I was having some serious problems a couple of weeks ago, but my plants are now perking up and starting to look a lot better. I seriously think the ferts have a lot to do with it. And they're cheap enought to at least try out.
