View Full Version : What kind of Pleco's do you have?

So recently I've noticed alot of activity on the forum about Pleco's. I've absolutly loved Pleco's since I was a kid, when we had a common one. So I'm just interested to hear what you've got now! Add any extra information you want to add as well! Names, size when bought, size now, amount paid, tank mates... If you have any tips/suggestions for anyone elses Pleco's, go ahead and post! You're the boss! Remember, this is just for informational purposes here. Try to avoid pressing your opinions or starting debates!

Here's what I've got!

150gal:
Big Daddy - Common Pleco (L021).
I don't remember how big he was when we got him, but he was pretty large. In the 8" range. Paid $30 for him. He's between 12"-14" now. Soon will be moved to our 280gal. Tankmates are an oscar, a green terror, a convict, and a clown knife.

40 gal:
Royal Pleco (L190).
These guys can get big, don't worry, I have a bigger tank for him when it's needed. I think we paid around $30 for him. He's currently about 2". He's in a tank with 2 Dragon Bichir's.

15gal:
Rubberlip Pleco (L187).
He's part of the clean-up crew. Paid about $10. He's in the tank with 8 red-eye tetra, 4 glass catfish and a BGK (again, have a much larger tank available Remember, this is about pleco's! :ezpi_wink1:).

15gal:
Gold Nugget Pleco (L018).
Paid $20.00
He's in the tank with 4 Tiger Barb, a cory, and 2 rainbow fish.

Does anyone know if a Common and a Royal (when he's big enough) can go peacefully in a 280gal tank together?

Lets hear about your Pleco's! thumbs2:

I sadly report that I do not have any pleco's. I did before, then noticed that the crazy thing that was suppose to eat algae and veggies, started eating my neon tetras at the time.

So, since I wanted the neons more, the pleco made it back to the fish store, where it could eat at its hearts content.

I replaced plecos with ottos, and now I see they have a batman otto, that I may look into.

Wow, crazy! I've never heard of a pleco actively eating fish. I have a large one, 12-14". When I would use feeder fish for the tank, every once in awhile a small one would get sucked up. It was interesting to see, but he never went after them.

I have rubberlips in all my tanks. I have not had a problem with them in any of my african tanks. They have been there for over a year. I do want to pick up a medusa pleco for my 55 gal.

I hav 3 beautiful Bristlenoses!

2 of them are about 4-5cm now and were bought together at -under- 2cm for $6, my larger one was at 3-4cm for $8 and is now 5-6cm.

They live in my 42g with Angels, Glowlites, Bala Sharks, a Kuhli and a Opaline Gourami, they love my huge piece of driftwood and favour it aswell as a large shell.

Sorry to hear Patriot... Angel, Your Pleco is killer! Mine common is about 14" now. I'll run my finger down him once in awhile, and nudge him if I need him to move while I'm cleaning the tank. Be careful to anyone who hasn't touched one yet. They have pointy spines on their dorsals, and can really clamp their side fins... Give you a good pinch!

I keep several species of sucker-mouthed cats, as loricariads are one of my specialties. I'll be posting a primer on several species in a day or two.
Currently I house: Ancistrus claro (6), Hypoptopoma gulare (12), Pseudolithoxus tigris (6), Parotocinclus cf. maculicauda (24), Hypancistrus sp. 'Queen Arabesque' (8), Sturisoma festivum (8), Panaque nigrolineatus (1) and Parotocinlclus sp. 'Amazonas' (28) in my tanks. The Panaque is the oldest of the loricariads I keep at 15 years old.
I've kept many more species of sucker-mouthed cats over the last 36 years, and some of those will be featured in my primer.
