I know this is obviously not a true red Texas, however it was sold as a Red Texas. The store also had "True" Red Texans that were much more expensive and out of stock.

What kind is this? Green, Blue, cross with red maybe? It actually has red tinting on the fins and mouth that do not show up to well in this pic

Hmm.. not a true red texas cichlid.. True reds are orangish/red when born....

He is probably a green or blue texas cichlid. Alot of color when they grow up though!!! It is hard to tell the difference until they start to color in.....

Red texas are a type of flowerhorn. I have one. They are red (actually orange) when young. I am not sure of all the technicalities with flowerhorns though. Here is a pic of him form today.

We got them in at work, so I get it for $10. All the others I have seen are 4" and $250. Hopefully I will be able to make a decent profit on him.

Mine is in a 40high with my mbunas and open water piscivores. They can be over a foot, so full size they would need a 75.

Nice fish! I wish I could find some locally! They actually resemble each other quite well, although yours is obviously a true red texan. I can't wait till mine gets full size.

arkie, btw the texans are quite aggressive he is pretty much running my tank right now, and I have 2 oscars, JD,GT,Firemouth. They really grow in to beauties! :thumb:

Hey fishguy, I just remembered I live in Northern Virginia too, I just moved here about 6 months ago. Anyway, what store do you work at?

Pets World, in Manassas. It is just a little shop.

They are aggressive. Mine runs that tank and is barely the biggest. Most I see are in their own tank.

There is a difference between a Red Texas and a Super Red Texas. That fish you posted picture of looks to be a Red Texas but the picture is not clear. A Red Texas is not a Flowerhorn just a Texas Cichlid with red coloration. The more red the higher the quality of the fish. The Flowerhorn variety are any where from orange to real bright red. Super Red Texans are red from birth and you don't wait for them to color up later.

Here is a picture of mine.

Here is a picture of a real nice one.

So yours is the flowerhorn type super red texas and the one on the bottom is just a red morph/high red morph of a pure texas cichlid?

The first 3 are Flowerhorns with who knows mixed to make them and the last one is a Red Texas.

NLS brings out the best colors. Just see how it turns out.

Good, mine is a flowerhorn. He is getting a little more black again, under his chin this time. He needs to make up his mind.

Those are much better pictures and I am sure that is a Red Texas now. Who knows how much Red color he will end up with in the end though.

Here is a pic of my regular Texas about the same size. He has no Red and differant markings.

Looking closer at your fish and it is one nice looking fish. I like how it is leaning more toward the Flowerhorn they mixed with it. It has the Flowerhorn flowers on the side and a lot of the fins and body shape. I doubt it will end up with much red color other than on the tips of the fins but I think it will be awesome looking. I would have bought it myself.

If I understand you correctly, you believe that my fish is actually a hybrid of texas and flowerhorn?

Ya I think it may be. It has the Flower marks Flowerhorns are known for. I have not seen a Texas Cichlid with those marking before. It is still early to know for sure but it is a possibility I think.
