I was looking at some filters online and saw this one (http://www.aquariumguys.com/penguin200b.html), I was wonder if it would work with a 50g by itself, or if I would need the UGF with it?

Go with the emperor 400 or an Aquaclear 110..... That is to small. Filters are rated without media. You need a filter rated at least twice your capacity.. An ideal filter should also flush 8-10 times your tank capacity per hour...

The aquaclear would be the best bet unless you absolutely want the biowheel...

If at possible go for a filter that is rated for 100 gallons on a 50 gallon tank. That is the general rule of thumb for a lot of people when it comes to filtration for their aquariums. If you want to go for an HOB go for a aquaclear 110. they are a great filter. You would not need the ugf as they are an antiquated filter system that usually cause more problems than they fix.

that filter is rated for 50g, but really its for a 33g, they just exagerate how good the filter is. on a 50g i would get one rated for a 100g

I would recommend the aquaclear. I've had several of them, they are built to last, they come with lots of extras most other powerfilters don't, and they are super quiet!

yeah, a AC110 or fluval 105 will do
