identify this tetra

I was just at Petco and bought what (according to the label) were pearl danios. I had been surprised at the time at how beautiful these danios were. The more I think about it though, the more I am convinced they are actually tetras. They are the "tall" tetra shape (like serpaes, as opposed to skinny, like neons), one inch long, and are clearish color with light orange translucent fins. The dorsal fin has a black stripe at the back edge of it. They school near the bottom of the tank underneath plants.

So... what could they be?

In other news, my nitrates are too high...

As for the pearl danios, the fish you describe doesn't sound like them...but it is hard to say what it is without a picture...at least for me..sorry. :(

Yeah I've been changing out 20% of the water every four days or so... I have become suspicious of the rocks I had in the tank (some granite, some flagstone, some unknown origin). Could they be leaching nitrates, or something that titrates into nitrates, into the tank? I have no problem with nitrites or ammonia.

It doesn't look like pearl danios. But it looks like some sorts of barb or tetra.

Maybe someone els can tell you more.
