View Full Version : Fish ID Needed...Parachromis....?

Just got this fish today. The only fish I really have been looking hard for is a red tiger motaguense. If I find one my tank will be complete. Today I came across one finally. Or so it seems. One shop I frequently visit had some of these. They were in single tanks of about maybe a half a gallon. I saw one and it was infested with ich. As I went down the line each one was progressively worse and worse. Whether or not they were motas I kind of wanted to buy them just to try and cure them since I felt so bad. Finally as I got towards the end, the last maybe 10 or so looked fine. They were advertised as Red Tiger Motaguenses so I couldnt resist. It was 5.99 for a single maybe 3/4" juvenile.

The shop I go to isnt very reliable but when it comes to equipment, they definitely are the cheapest. Not only that, but they do carry a large variety of freshwater fish. The only thing is, theyre not too keen when it comes to the type of fish they have. Thats why Im not sure if this is really a motaguense or loiselle or Friedrichstahli

btw, sorry for the bad pictures. its hard to get a shot since its so small and fast

I'm pretty lost with cichlids unless it's like a german blue ram but i'm sure someone like Dave knows what yours is. just wait and you'll get a great answer.

its definitely not a ram

it looks like the same shape. maybe a cousin of the ram.

lol.....thanks for the suggestions but I dont think my LFS is that far off. Im 100% positive its not a ram/apisto/etc. The only thing is, I need to know if its a mota, freddy, or loiselle. Ive seen pictures of adults but never seen pictures of juveniles so im not sure how to tell the difference.

You should try the Cichlid-forum. They may be able to help you ID your fish.

Its hard to tell when it comes to younger fish. they can change so much from juvi's to adults.

Definetly not a ram, so we've ruled that out, only 1000 more possibilities!

Its hard to tell when the fish are younger, it could even be a crossbreed, making it even harder to identify, or nearly impossible.
