I've seen shredded fins but one of my smaller firemouths has nearly his entire tail fin gone from another firemouth. This was accomplished in two days.

I have melafix here but I also have ferts in the tank so hate to combine the two. I just wondered if darned near the entire fin will grow back.

As long as the bone at the base of the tail isn't damaged it should grow back. Can only imagine it will take a good amount of time and might look a bit odd in terms of color pattern etc. I would just keep doing what you're doing with the meds and see what happens.

Hobbs my small firemouth's fins get shredded some times (he is in with some africans - I need my 30 gallon to get him out....:help: ) I just use stress coat and salt and it usually works.... The tail should hopefully grow back to the length.. Hopefully it is not down to the base...

Sorry to hear about the firemouth.....

Stress coat or melafix will prevent infection. And yes, it will grow back.

One of my neons lost it's tail (either to a Dragon bichir or a BGK) and it never grew back. He ended up dying. But neons are small finicky fish, and it was really really gone.

With melafix it should grow back. It might take some time though, good luck!

Good to know. It will probably take 4 months to fix what that one firemouth managed to do in two days.

My Oscar and Pictus had a go at it with each other. Well his names lucky now and he has half a tail fin. Still living and looks happy after about 4 months.
