Here is the 20 gal long I converted to sand, which I love, although I want to find a dark sand to darken it up a bit
20 gallon long contains 3 platy(1 surviving fry), 4 kuhli loaches, an albino and bronze cory

For a dark sand, consider T Grade 3M Color Quartz in black. Should be less than $20 for more than enough for the whole tank.

Is that an aquarium or general use sand turbokmt? When I shopped for aquarium sand I saw some black....but the bag did not specify "will not alter water parameters" so I stayed away from it.

Kimmer,
It's actually a general use sand, but as it is quartz it won't alter parameters at all. There are a number of folks in the planted tank community that have used it quite successfully.

There are also some granite based sands out there that would work, but I've had a hard time finding them.

Great! Now, do you know of any of the chains that might be around here that specifically carry it? We have Home Depot and Lowes right in town. I have a tendency not to buy something for my tanks unless I am absolutely sure of what I am getting, which is why I bought the higher dollar aquarium sand previously....play sand bags can be vague and had heard of a couple of "make sure it doesn't contain....." suggestions.

Sorry. Don't know. But you could contact 3M through their web site and ask.
