It would be nice if spammers actually CARED but they don't. Anyone who would post smut on a community board has a problem and posting on a board that has young people is a low- down dog with no morals of their own.

Thanks hobbs, any chance of putting in a thread in the main part of the forums for reporting this sort of trash

Just yell for a moderator. It's the first thing I check for when I log in. Some are pretty bad.
Actually, it would be nice if moderators had a little star or something next to their names so people would know they were a moderator. Or....Moderator under their signature.

Many of the sites you register in will request an email addy and when it's submitted, you have to wait for a confirmation email from the site. In this way, that email addy is no longer useable and you are unable to sign in again under another name and use that same address.
I have banned 8 or 9 users in two days and others just deleted. It's been nuts this last week especially. One of them today had actual nude pictures. Another problem is that even if they are banned, they still remain in the Members List. I'd venture that many of those members were spammers and that's why you see so many that have never posted. They sign up, do their dirty deed and then remain on the Member List forever.
I tried to log into a site the other night that would not accept my login due to "inactivity" after 3 months. Of course when I tried again to register, got a message that my email was already in use so that's another way to keep repeaters from returning. Kept me out and I'm not even a spammer. :)
I don't know of any other way to keep them out. I do wish we could clean out that Members List, tho, and get rid of all those names of people who haven't been on the forum for ages or who have never even posted. I have a feeling that many of those are repeaters who just register under another name.

Most spammers are bots and will never actually return. We just have to remain on top of it and delete the posts as they appear unfortumately.

Yes. Most, almost all spam are mad by bots so banning or not doesn't make much difference.
I will look into removing banned users from userlist. However a lot, I would say the mayority of the users that have no post are legitimat users who just never posted. The trick is to get such user to start posting.
I really appriciate the great work the mods do.

I'd still second the suggestion to make moderators more obvious (Title under name similar to William's "Administrator"). This can also help when a thread starts to go astray and the mod tries to keep it on track...but people don't realize it's a mod and don't take the directions seriously.

Spam comes in so many forms from car insurance to cell phones to baby diapers but for some reason, this site gets the lowest of the low. It's also strange that none will show up for several days and then wham.....6 will come all at once, which makes me feel they were the same person registering but as you mentioned, probably just bots.
I do have an idea that will put some work on the moderators but will reduce that Member List. I suggest we all take a group of names, for instance, I'll take A's thru D's and send a message to each Member and invite them back if they joined anytime in 2006. If they haven't been here for a year or more, just delete them. It's easy enough to see when they logged in last. If they haven't logged in for 6 or 7 months, send them an invite and ask them back.
I think it's a pretty safe bet that if they haven't been here for a year they aren't coming back, lost interest, had a computer crash or their fish died. :)
It'll be a big job going thru them all but, once done, a cleaned up and updated list and then maybe we can stay on it the end of every year and hopefully get some members back. We would need the tools to delete those past Members or would have to send you a list which you probably wouldn't like because there will be a gaggle of them. I don't know if that option is open to us moderators now or not?
Our job as moderators here is to give you a hand so why not? We can certainly each do maybe 20 names a days. I'm willing.

I agree. I know most don't know who the moderators are. And I do appreciate the heads-up on the spams since I check my messages first. kudos!

I have finally gotten the proverbial thumb out of my …….. and changed to another registration process to cut down on spam. I know of a number of forums that had spam problems and this system eliminated the problem. Some of those forums have gone a month or more without any spam at all. We will just have to wait and see if it helps us as well. Please let me know if you se a drop or increase in spam the coming week.
If this system don't work I'll combine the old and the new which would work even better but I don't wan to make to hard (much work) to register and scare members away if I don't have too.
The new system is based on questions and you are welcome to suggest questions for it. Just remember that it has to be questions that all humans can answer. I.e. very very easy if you’re a human and not a bot.
However it should be said that systems like these can never prevent human spammers, just bots, but since almost all spam are made by bots …….
