I have this guppy who for weeks has been keeping her gills open most of the time. She spends most of her time a the surface and I haven't seen her eat for a long time. I have had her in a 10 gallon hospital tank for a couple weeks. The water is almost perfect O Ammonia and nitrite, Nitrate 10-20 and she is the only fish in there, since the other one in there died the other day.
I am pretty certain she has TB since she's got a tail that goes three different directions, but I wonder the gill problem might be a separate issue that can be treated. I keep the water around 78-80 degrees on account of the TB and I have 1 T aquarium salt in the tank.
I don't have the heart to put her down and I want to know if the open gill problem is something else and if there is anything else I can do to make it better.

If the guppy has laboured breathing then im guessing that its gill flukes! She is near the surface which is another thing that a fish witha gill fluke does. Good Luck!

What treatment do you like for gill flukes?

I had a bit of success w/ the salt bath the other day. It didn't bring down the swelling, but it got her to spend less time a the surface. Actually, I am not sure what concentration to use, but I used about twice the normal concentration and only had her in that for a minute or two.
The instructions give 1 teaspoon per 10 gal. I usually put that much in because of the mollies - except for the 42 gal tank w/ the cory cats - I just use one teaspoon for the whole thing. Does it vary according to what the illness is, or should I always use the dosage on the jar? Would the concentrations I mentioned above help prevent the other fish from catching gill flukes?

I put her in a bucket of 2 gal water and 2 tsp salt last night. The gills still look inflamed, but she's eating better.

Hi, my planted tank is about 4 mths old, with peaceful fish community (2 male & 2 female guppies, platies, lots of cherry shrimps and cherry shrimp babies). My female guppies s' gill plates seem to get more and more transparent.. Under the light, it seems to have 'hollowed out'.. and i could see the red gills. This seem to affect only the female guppies. One of them has given birth 3 times, so i have some 3-week old baby guppies.
My water parameter seems ok (ph a bit low at 6 plus but stable, temp about 27 deg., low nitrate level). water change is about 20% weekly, good aeration and filtration.
can anyone advise if there is anything serious with the female guppies? they are eatin and swimming actively, but i noticed that the newer female (about 1 mth plus in my tank) became a bit thinner and her gill plate is pronouncedly more transparent than before.

here's a picture of the guppy. there are air bubbles at the background. the pic has been blown up, so it's a bit blurred.
pls advise if there's any infection and remedies. thanks!
