How is this for nano filtration?

It will be for my 10g, with ~20 lbs of live rock, and 15 lbs of live sand.

Stocking is still up in the air.

That looks pretty close to the built in filtration of my bio-cube.

i m sure its great but i think the more things u can leave outside your tank the better.

i agree with fenix, IMO a simple aquaclear mini or one of these is best. in smaller tanks like 10g's the more stuff thats outside the tank the better

i had the mini canister on my 20g when it was a nano

That is a cool canister, but it is only half the rate of the filter I selected, although turning over the entire tank 8 times per hour isn't that bad.

If I got my filter, it would have something in the aquarium, but it would greatly reduce the need of powerheads.

Any other opinions?

Also, does Big als accept paypal?

I would get it if I were you. It looks like the kind that comes built in with nano reef aquarium cubes.

if you wanted flow with style you could get a koralia 1, my reef has a couple of koralia 2 and theyre awesome

Well, Dave said If I had enough High Quality live rock, I could go filterless, but I'd still need a powerhead or two for water movement. I don't think I am going to be able to afford the ~$350 for the good stuff, and to ship it here, so I am going to have to have some form of filtration.

That canister is pretty cool though......I just wish Bigals took paypal.

some stores carry the mini canister, i got mine here at a aquarium discount warehouse for $25.

The only mini-canister I have seen around here is for reptile tanks, and I wasn't too impressed with it. I think its called a mini rapids canister filter, or something to that effect.

another option is to get a fluval 105 canister, it will give enough flow for corals. i have a 205 on my 15g long

I'm not going to blow that much on a filter for just a 10 gallon.

cocoa_pleco
02-14-2008, 03:09 AM
just aim the output in a corner and it will evenly disperse

....you don't get it. Its not the flow thats a problem, its the idea of dropping $120 on a filter for a 10 gallon that isn't needed.

I'm not looking for a HOB. I would like something else that could do a better job. HOBs and saltwater tanks are not good mixes in my experience.

maybe a sponge filter then?

I'm not really asking for other filters. I was asking about the filter in my first post, or anything similar......

i guess the one in your link or just filtering by LR are the only options then

Drum what all you planning to put in the tank...........

Drumachine09
02-14-2008, 04:46 PM
Soft corals, zoos, mushrooms, a few other softies.

As for fish, nothing big or expensive. Probably an Ocellaris and a clown goby, with 10 snails.

I think the filter you have picked will do just fine.

Oh but what about......just kidding

jbeining75

It says upto 30 gallons...... plus the adjustable flow will limit the use of power heads like you said... Just run it in a corner and point the intake along the side and the outlet down the back to push an oval motion in the tank.....

Anyone see any potential problems with that filter?

What would you run in the filter? I assume you would be ditching the bio-balls???

Drumachine09
02-14-2008, 06:15 PM
That one of my questions too.

Since it has an open top, I plan on putting some chaeto in at the top, but as for the rest, i'm kinda lost.

Yeah, I remember looking at that filter when I was checking out refugium options for my 10g. I didn't want to pay big money for a pre-fabricated HOB fuge, so I was trying to figure out a different route.

Ultimately, that unit kind of scared me off because I couldn't tell what is looked like on the inside. The fact that the media, drip tray, and pump are in there, might not allow for much customization, but who knows. In the end, I thought it would be better just to spend $ on a tried and true method, than spendig $35 on something that might or might not work.

I ended up making a fuge out of an AC HOB.

I'm guessing you saw that ~$250 Dr. F&S fuge with the built in skimmer/light?

coachfraley
02-14-2008, 06:39 PM
Yes, I looked at that one, and some knock-offs on ebay. Then I looked into setting up a below tank fuge...but the overflow boxes can get really expensive, and then you have to set up the baffles in the fuge, so that route is probably just as expensive.

The cheapest route definatley seemed to be the AC.

BTW, I am in the process of getting a custom made all-in-one to replace my 10g, so I will be scrapping my HOB fuge. Good thing I didn't buy anything more expensive!

I remember seeing that thread a while back. Just to let you know, I am still jealous, lol.

Do you have any detailed pics of your AC fuge? Its a 110 right?

lol, thanks!

Actually, I am using an AC30 because I had one lying around. If I were buying one, I would definitely go bigger. I would probably get the 70. What is nice about the 70, is that the impeller is interchangeable with the smaller AC's, so you could swap an AC20 impeller and slow down the flow in the fuge. If you use the AC110, you would need to shave down the impeller yourself in order to slow down the flow.

I think the AC30 is working OK, but I would definitely like to be able to grow a bigger chaeto ball.

I've seen that palm light in the Dr. F&S catalouge. Does it do a good job supporting your chaeto?

Also, is that mesh just the media basket?

coachfraley
02-14-2008, 09:56 PM
The palm light I have is the smallest one, I think it is 5 watts. The chaeto is growing pretty well, but I am sure the next light up would be better. I just couldn't fit that light on top of the AC30.

All I did was hack the "handles" off of the media basket, and use some Home Depot gutter guard to cover the outlet. If I was setting up a bigger AC, I would probably set up a baffle (with acrylic) and use a piece of the media basket to cover the outlet.

i have a 110 with chaeto in it, and a 13w PC fixture, works awesome
