I'm pretty sure that leaving the light off will solve this problem, but just to be sure [even moreso!], does anyone have any advice about this? I have bettas, and so the tank light doesn't really need to be on at all, now that I have heaters.

less light and more water changes to deplete the excess nutrient levels.... if you can get a couple oto cats they work well if your betta will allow them in your tank

Keeping live plants will also help since the plant will use up the nutrients the algae needs the algae will grow less. Lights shut off more often will help tremendously and weekly water changes. oto cats do help though they do have special feeding rquirements. They need lots of algae and though many aquarists dont have enough of it to give them what they need algae wafers and blanched veggies such as zucchini. cucumber, lettuce, spinach etc. Doing research on fish before buying is always the way to go!!!
