he has those spots/lines but the blue is an irrodesent that just goes over top

on second thought scratch melanchromus they have horizontal lines... hmm I wish sailor was on I'm a south american cichlid guy, hes the africans guy......

his black is faded out hes black with blue patches almost like a demasoni..... hmm..... I dunno know man sailor would be able to tell you in like 2 seconds I bet

he has the forehaed line of the melanchromus but he also just spawned with my blue johanni

yeah hes probably a johanni but his colors are faded out, it's really hard to tell.....

when i bought him he was color underneth the blue kind of a whitish gray with the dark spots/ lines he was mabe an inch when i got him

He is definately from Lake Malawi. He looks like sub adult Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus" . There are several sub species he sort of resembles. Where did you get him a LFS. When it comes to africans I stay away from africans as most of the times they are just put in as small or med mixed africans or mixed zebras etc. If african cichlids are what you want find a good breeder or some where on line.

It is a mbuna, which is the important part. I don't think it is important to worry about whether it is 'true' or 'pure', just that it looks good to you and is healthy. Unless it was wild caught and you know where in the lake it was caught, or from parents that were, you don't actually know if it is or not. And since some of these 'species' may be the result of natural hybridization, it is even harder to determine what is what. If it came out of an 'assorted african cichlid' tank you need to assume it is a hybrid. As long as they are healthy and look good you have what you need.

It's a male Msobo. He will get about 4.5 inches long.
