I started out thinking a 25 was big..

Then I doubled that, thinking better go BIG big and get a 55..

Now this week I was all settled on a 70-75g..

Today I'm thinking a 90 is just a couple more inches wide..

Might as well..

Would give me an excuse for 2 cannisters, 2 heaters, more depth..

Well, your addiction isn't with aquariums, its on spending money.

So, why don't you cut out the middle man, and just send it to me?

Nah, dude, I think 75gal is better than 90gal for plants, because the 90 is a few inches higher and I think that makes you need more light.

doug the 90 gallons are no bigger than the 75 gallons... the footprints are both 48 long by 18 deep. the height on the 90's are 26 inches instead of 22 inches on the 75 gallon.

Yeah, I was considering that, too..

But when you consider the 4" of substrate, plus the little bit of room you have to leave so you can have floating plants..

I dunno..

Not according to this... Guess it depends on the manufacturer?

Yep, go for the 125! I was going to get a 60g (260L) at first, but was able to get a good deal on the 120G plus stand...I'm so glad I did. It looked HUGE at first, now it looks kind of small LOL Or get two tanks...I haven't got my fish for my first tank yet (cycling) and I'm already thinking about tank number two LOL

doug z
02-07-2008, 05:00 AM
Wait, I think surfline's are those god-aweful tanks that literally curve in a wave-type shape..

I saw one at a pet store, and I'm like, uh-huuuuuh..

I'll take the goldfish in the stiletto heels, too, please!

jbeining75
02-07-2008, 05:02 AM
yeah I'm not sure about those standard 90 gallon is 48 x 18 that thing is 48 x 20 x 25....... there has to be something indenting into the tank to lose the gallons with those extra inches there huh...... I don't know doug I've never seen one.....

doug z
02-07-2008, 05:06 AM
Yeah, they're kitschy, dumb little things..

doug z
02-07-2008, 05:11 AM
Nope, 90 is my max, and it looks like it wouldn't be a good thing, for a planted tank..

I should hurry up and buy a 75 before I change my mind.. :((

fins_n_fur
02-07-2008, 05:14 AM
er, why wouldn't a larger tank be good for plants? Mine's doing fine?

jbeining75
02-07-2008, 05:15 AM
the 75 will be much better, alot better for your plants and your fish are gaining no footprint size from the 75 to the 90 gallon..... good luck with the 120 ..oops i mean 75... lol

doug z

It's fine, if you have the lighting for it..

But I'm going to be doing fluorescents, which don't do so well with the deeper tanks..

((

why is 90 your max?

I dont understand the logic in that..

in fact give me 33 good reasons why you are maxing out at 90? I think you should consider a 125, clearly a better long term investment.

extra species, larger schools, a chance to create a much more natural environment. You could actually plant a tree in it, and there you go its environmentaly friendly, think of all the CO2 that this tree would suck out of the atmosphere and go towards creating a nice home for some fish in need.

clearly its better for everyone.

go for 700 gallons

Since you are looking to spend the extra money, just get a 90g and make it a reef!

For a FW tank, I agree there's not a lot of difference between a 75g and a 90g. More volume is always better, but in this case, I think you are good with the 75g plan. For my SW setup, I was thinking of a 75g and I'm really glad I got the 90g. I love the extra height.

doug z
02-07-2008, 08:20 AM
Yeah, 75 it is..

Thanks for the affirmation.. :)

Doug, custom make a stand and get both, an unplanted 90 gal cichlid tank on the bottom and a planted 75 on top. Best of both worlds lol.

LOL I like the way you think! Great idea! Or go one step further and put the 120 on the bottom, the 90 in the middle, and the 75 on top...It would have to be the world's strongest stand tho' LOL

Go BIG. You would think smaller size means less money but when you want to upgrade in a year to a bigger tank in the end it will cost less to just do it now.

I'm thinking this summer i'll get a 100+ and work on that.
Since my 30g is starting to turn around and is growing quite well.

doug z
02-07-2008, 07:11 PM
Yeah, a 5' long one would be nice..

But I gotta draw the line somewhere.. :))

Has anyone here ever custom made a stand? A tank?

jbeining75
02-07-2008, 07:15 PM
the line you draw doug should be where you want to cut the wall out to make more room for a bigger tank..... lol

Me and my buddy made a 220 gallon acyrlic when his 2 24 inch pacu cracked his 220 glass........ I can't believe it held the water....

doug z
02-07-2008, 07:19 PM
Did you do it, or did you get a glass shop to do it?

I guess you'd have to do it yourselves..

A tank that size you wouldn't even be able to get through a door, I bet!

How much did that cost?

hpt84
02-07-2008, 07:20 PM
If you build your own aquarium you could pay the price of a 75g and have a 120g tank.

jbeining75
02-07-2008, 07:24 PM
my friend paid for it, he had already built them before and I hadn't.. he used 1/2 inch acrylic so I'd imagine probably 2 grand worth of acrylic plus joiner compond plus wood to stabalize it.... I will call him and ask.... It might take a few days as we live apart now since we are both out of the military.....

doug z
02-07-2008, 07:41 PM
Wow!

That's look pretty great, though..

Why acrylic?

Though I guess it would have been impossibly heavy to have done it with glass, when I think about it..

jbeining75
02-07-2008, 07:44 PM
the two pacu busted his 220 glass.... he had 2 two foot long pacu in a 220 gallon.... his girlfriend came over with her little girl, the little girl went yelling and running across the living room hit the glass the pacu freaked and nailed the side and put a crack half down the glass......... 1/2 sheet of glass cracked..... this is why walmart shouldn't sell pacu.....
