i see rating on top of each page.
what is it there for and what do it do, or is used for

If you look avove your post you se a bar with different texts. the 4th option in that bar is rate this thread. If you move you mouse over the little arrow next to that text (you might have to click the arrow) a menu to rate the thread appears.

informative / funny / otherwise well liked.

There can be many reasons for a thread gettinh a good rating but generally it means that it liked by others.
