If you read up on all the fish diseases, you will be able to identify problems before you loose your fish and be able to act immediately.
It's good to have on hand medications for ICK and fungus so action can be taken the moment you spot a problem.
You should also have a quaranteen tank to keep your new fish in for two weeks prior to introducing them to your other fish.
