A pair alone are very unlikely to breed, they are schooling fish and are therefore more comfortable in groups.

Gez, I have 19 and never had a spawn. I know my bottom feeders have to be cleaning up eggs. I definately have males and females.

cocoa already posted the males are small and the females larger and more plump. Males also have darker skirts.

Now I just set my 10 gallon up and might try it myself.

Not to hijack the thread but as far as getting tetras to spawn, I've heard a lot about water changes with cooler water. What sort of schedule would anyone recommend for the cooler water changes, and is it the tetras reacting to the temperature change, addition to the water, or both? OK, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Cooler water is simulating either rainfall or a drop in temperature consistent with a change in season. I think it depends on the type of fish.

I just bought three blackskirts yesterday. Their blackness has really faded. Will it come back as they become more comfortable in their new home? Chemistry seems to be okay. This tank is only about two weeks old.

The colour does come back, mine go pale after a gravel vac and water change for a while, they also go pale at night, so when you turn the light on in the morning you might find them all washed out. It does come back though, when they are relaxed and happy it comes back. If you have room to, get a few more of them, they are happier in schools, so the more of them the better.
