- had a 30 year old goldfish die on me, LFS said that he could go in a 75f tank
- had a $80 SW shrimp get eaten because of my royal dottyback
- bought a peacock eel, saw it for 10 minutes and i never found it
- years ago got a baby jack dempsey, treated it in a hospital tank, heater got the water to 100f, poor thing got boiled
- had goldfish die on my when i was young due to goldfish bowls
in the 18ish years ive had fish, i probably have lost 100 fish, all due to beginners mistakes years ago, i havent had a fish die on me for quite a few months now
EDIT- forgot the 2 tanks from hell, the WORST I HAD when i was a beginner, all or close to all fish died
-5.5g, 1 pleco, 3 goldfish, 2 ottos, 3 corys, a few ghost shrimp, some loaches, all but a goldfish died
-10g nanoreef, had 30w of incandescent lighting, a few damsels, clowns, and a urchin and starfish and condy anemone, all but the anemone and urchin died, they went to the LFS. surprisingly the condy, that should have had a 150w MH on the tank, did fine for the time i had it, i didnt know how to drip acclimate and the starfish got a nasty HITH thing where i could see his brain, this tank was 4 years ago and ive learnt ALOT in that time, i rarely lose a SW fish and never had a coral die on me yet

it only took about 5 hours to get all the soap out i put the tank on the deck and let the garden hose run into it till all the bubbles stopped then pulled everything out 1 by 1 till every bit of rock , gravel and ornament was soap free

When I was a kid, I had a 10 gallon tank. I can't remember exactly what was in the tank, but I do remember how the fish died. My little sister was trying to be helpful one day while she was home sick. She thought she would feed my fish for me while I was at school, but instead of feeding them a pinch of food, she dumped the whole can of flakes into the tank. By the time I got home, the water appeared looked like chocolate milk and smelled something aweful.

Oh, I believe I have wiped out scores of aquatic species due to my stupidity... I took out a 10 gallon full of Mollies, Platys, Neons and Danios (noticed how that is all plural and it was only a 10 gallon). And trust me, this was day 3 after buying the tank, putting in the gravel and decorations and loading up the fish (3 years ago of course). Can we say overstocked-new-tank-syndrome-ammonia/everything/spike to the max!!!!
I bought 3 Denison Barbs at 30 bucks a piece and they all died within 3 days. This was recently.
Ahhh the joys of fishkeeping. All my little guys have lasted me a good while now. So here's to hoping those days are few and far between. Don't feel bad, we all get hit with it.

The one that stick out in my mind from my 20 or so years of off and on again fish keeping is as follows. I had a 90 gal tank with 3 big cat fish in them. A Tiger shovel nose, a sailfin cat and a big white 1 i can't remember the name of at the moment. In 1989 I was getting ready again for 1 of the many moves in the military and was selling my 3 catfish. I had found a buyer for them and was getting ready to sell them off. We went camping for the may 24 long weekend. When we got home the house was just rank. It was the catfish tank. It had turned into a big tank of fish soup. The heater malfunctioned. The tempurated didn't even register on the thermometer. That was my last aquarium for a long long time.

My worst recent experience was when I killed my $100 ray, Hucklebuck. I bought him and put him in my daughters tank while I got his up and running. I let the tank run for a few weeks. I tested the water one day and the ammonia was very low and nitrates were about 10, so I thought Great, it's good to go! Unfortunatly, I think the tank was at the beginning of it's cycle, and not the end. He died a few days later... I left work early to go home and try to save him, but I couldn't. Cara was off that day and came back from her running around. It was the first time in a long time that I've actually cried.
It kinda brought up memories of when I was a medic right out of HS. I had someone die on me, and it really upset me because I wasn't able to save him. Weird how your fish can make you think of things you haven't thought of in years.
I was doing a water change to try to help them, and while I was pouring cup after cup of water in, I cried the whole time.
