I am setting up a 55 gallon tank and purchased a penguin bio wheel 350 power filter which hangs on the back of the aquarium. The problem is that I do not have the necessary clearance behind the tank for the filter. Is there another type of filter that i can use to clean and aerate the water with the same or greater efficiency than the filter with the bio wheel that I can put in a cabinet below the aquarium.

also the biowheel filter that hangs on the back of the tank creates an unsightly mess with lime or scale build up which i would like to avoid.

ps. the aquarium is in a place where i cannot move it any further from the wall. also i do not know if I picked the best kind of filter to begin with.

You should be able to find a number of filters that does what you want. look for external filters. I personally usually recommend eheim filters.

i am looking at the canister filters, but do they provide adequate aeration?
