Tommorow's my b-day, and I asked my mom if I can get an eclipse 6, and she said yes! Tommorow I am going to the LFS and getting it, and I am putting a betta in it. I am probably getting sand for it. Are there any problems with this? And every 'site I see says "feed betta pellets and bloodworms for treats". Can they only eat bloodworms? Or can they have other foods too? I bet they can, but I don't want to risk it eating it and then dieng. Also, if this particular betta likes other fish, is there ay other species of fish that I can put in this size tank?

Hey Happy early bday shockshocksahd! thanks for all the valuble contributions you put into the site.

The bettas cant eat only bloodworms, unless you want them t have health problems. Either feed NLS as their staple or Hikari betta bio gold+

I would put some corys in there and maybe an ADF

my beta is in a community tank, and doing fine. he wil also eat the smaller peices of NLS flake food at the top when everyone else is swiming around.

Well of course I wouldnt feed ONLY bloodworms, i meant they can only have that as a treat- no shrimp, no tubifex, no nothing except bloodworms. Of course I will feed a staple. ADF is albino dwarf frog right? I can get 3 cories. But I don't know the type really. Are the only ones I cant have are brochis, peppred and bronze?

Ty

why not those three?

shockshockshad
01-26-2008, 10:38 PM
They are the biggest types of cories and get too big- 3 inches instead of about 2.

Oh, and theres another question too. Is sand okay for this? Or is gravel better? I mean, will a betta dig it up or anything? And are they messy fish? I know the pigmy cories will like it.

Happy early birthday! Whichever you get make sure to post some pics for all of us to see!

Sand is better in almost all tanks. Bettas are more of surface dwellers so they wont dig it up. If you can get your hands on dwarf corys, whch only get about an inch, you caould keep like 5.

And yeah it is okay if the only treat you feed is bloodworms. If NLS is their staple, there is no need for treats, unless you are breeding them.

I got the tank! Unfortunatly, I thought that eclipse systems come with heaters, and they dont, so I will get one tommorow. I got sand, and some cool rocks. 2 are red, and 1 is really smooth with stripes. Cool rocks without the gaudiness. I got sand too. Right now, my wood is boiling, and the tank has no water. I am ordering the plastic plants tommorow. I will post pics soon!

Yes I know. Sadly (or not) there is no cure. When I get back from spring vacation, hopefully I am getting a 90 gallon CA biotope.

Hooray happy birthday! Put up some pics of the new tank when its done!

You could probably fit 3 panda cories in there but as you said those 3 wouldn't fit. Even the pandas may be a little cramped.

With NLS no need for bloodworms but you could but some frozen bloodworms in occasionally if you really wanted him to be the healthiest he could be.

Good luck and congrats!

I have frozen tubifex, if thats good. I plan on getting more frozen food, like BW and BS, but right now I only have tubifex. I didn't really ask if they would be fine with bloodworms as there only treat, I asked if they are only supposed to have bloodworms as their only treat.

And I think I will get the 4-5 pygmies. They will be happier anyways in a school, rather than just 3 pandas.

And since this is pretty much the same topic, I might get another new tank! My mom's friend came over and said she has a tank in her gargage, if I want it. She says its a little smaller than mine, but she doesn't know the gallon size. I suspect its 20 gallons. She said it has stuff with it too like the hood. Thats all she knows. She didn't know what a filter or heater looked liike, but sometime this week I will get the tank! Any stocking suggestions? I don't want plants or community fish. Some sort of special tank....

no blood worms isn't the only thing you can feed as a treat: tubifex (frozen or freeze dried), live brine shrimp/frozen/freeze dried, blood worms (frozen or freeze dried).

for a 20g you could kribensis??? they are nice...they are peaceful though...but they have AWESOME colour and if you get a male and female they are easy to breed.

Anything else with the kribs?

You could have a male female krib pair in the 20gal, along with a midwater ot surface dwelling schooling fish. Maybe some tiger barbs.

i don't know if you could but maybe some killies...since they are top dwelers....or some marble hatchets. A nice school of marble hatchets would look nice.

the reason you want middle - top dwellers is because kribs are middle - bottom dwellers.

Yeah, when breeding the kribs will attck the cories. Any (semi) peaceful shoaling fish will work.

in that case......i would get marble hatchets.....they are amazing....i had some a couple years back and they were awesome.......they school together......but you have to keep it well covered (the top of the tank) becuase they are jumpers and will jump when scared.

01-29-2008, 01:17 AM
Okay. I am not sure If I can get specifically male and female. How do you tell them apart? I don;t really want jumpers. What about the killies? So, this is it so far:
1 male krib
1 female krib
4 killes?
That doesn't seem like much. Are there any other fish?

Sexing these fish is increasingly difficult the younger the fish is. Males will have longer more pointed fins with color extending all the way to the end of the fin. This normally isn't the case on females. A strange way to sex these fish which isn't usually the case with other fish is the caudal fin will actually be pointed on males whereas its rounded on the female. Females also have much more intense red/pink on the underside and their bodies are more rounded than the males.

that stocking sounds good........other fish.....um i don't know.

EDIT - the second quote i got from a website on the internet.....lol. from google.

sounds good....should be a nice tank.

are you planning on like planting it or something???

shockshockshad
01-30-2008, 12:15 AM
No, but I could get low lights, if you really think I should. Honestly, of I don't plant it, I am not sure how I will decorate it! It will look a little boring with rocks and wood. I might get plastic plants, but I don't know if I will.

squirt_12
01-30-2008, 12:18 AM
you don't have to have live plants. Heck you don't even really have to have any plants at all. But make sure if you get a pair of kribs that you have something like a clay pot for them to lay eggs on.

EDIT - the wood and rocks will work.

shockshockshad
01-30-2008, 12:20 AM
So I don't need the clay pot? Or the roks and wood will look good for decor? I don't really understand....lol

Incredulous_Ed
01-30-2008, 03:45 AM
You can make a beautiful tank using only rocks and wood and plastic plants.

Kribs need either a clay pot or rock cave to breed in.
