View Full Version : Guppies or Gold? Both worth the same...

01-25-2008, 11:37 PM
Man! Finally found the nice fancy male guppies I wanted. I had planned on buying 6 to min. potential aggression issues...BUT

They were over $9.00 each!!! The price dropped to $8.05 if you bought 3-5...so I bought 3 - and made the poor clerk pick out the 3 I wanted! LOL...for that price I wasn't settling for second best!

I'd like about 10 in total...but I'll have to find some cheaper ones!

That's just nuts! I don't mind paying for fish...but is there something about guppy pricing I'm out of date with???

I'd post a picture, but the camera went on a road trip...won't have it back until next week...

$9 a guppy? Are they crazy?

Demi ^_^

Wow, that price is steep 0_o But congratz on your new guppies! They are about $6 here and I find that expensive - Adorable, little Angelfish are cheaper at $5!

01-25-2008, 11:54 PM
$9 a guppy? thats insane! here ugly ones are $2 and more fancy ones are $3-5

01-25-2008, 11:57 PM
I know! LOL...but I also knew these were the ones I wanted! So what do I do? Cave to the price or not get them?

I totally feel like an idiot paying that much!

Cocoa? Go check out your Petland...

$3-5? That is a terrific price! Our LFS is quite expensive, but very good :) Around $6 for a guppy here - no matter how ugly!

01-26-2008, 12:14 AM
People buy these guys for feeders around here!Just kidding, but still pretty cheap.

01-26-2008, 12:34 AM
There definately are feeder guppies...but usually not the fancies...but given how prolific they can be, I suppose it happens.

See the guppy with the yellow tail in that picture? Got me one of 'em today! :1luvu:

01-26-2008, 02:47 AM
guppys are about $7 here

01-26-2008, 02:57 AM
here, I can get 4 guppies for 16$... which makes them 4$ each... for a decent size... and if I'd want feeder, it's 7$/dozen... so.... at 9$ each, they are just crazy... IMHO...

Tho, Gratz on theses new Guppies :D

01-26-2008, 02:57 AM
Those really are INSANE prices for a guppy!!!!! in the shops they are never more than $1 here and even then.. just a glance around the local online market and you can get them everywhere for free as they breed like mad everyone is trying to get rid of them...

01-26-2008, 02:57 AM
It seems many things are more expensive in The Land Down Under...

...but I think it's just the stupid store...they're more expensive for everything so I try to avoid shopping there, unless no one else has what I need...

Buying from them still ends up cheaper than say, ordering, would be...

01-26-2008, 02:59 AM
LOL...and apparently they're cheap like borscht in The Netherlands!

01-26-2008, 03:05 AM
guppys here are $4.50 no matter what they look like lol. most livebearers are that price

01-26-2008, 03:54 AM
your lucky arkie the live bearers are expensive here and cost more for the pretty odd lookin ones

01-26-2008, 04:02 AM
i should just buy up big on the livebearers and then come visit you hehe

01-26-2008, 04:38 AM
Wow that is expensive!(but then again this is coming from the place with $119 clown plecos)

Do these guppys have any peticular pattern? or are they Deltas? I know deltas can get pricey especially if they are from a breeder.

01-26-2008, 02:07 PM
I was just online looking at a Pacific Northwest guppy breeders site and found a trio some of his award winning fish for......$100.00. I must say though, that they are insanley pretty fish and nothing like the local lfs. i had no idea guppies were such a big deal.

01-26-2008, 02:52 PM
Yes, specialty breeding pairs or trios are very expensive. I knew that.

And the ones I bought are 'known', but now common, colour varieties.

I just didn't think the market (well, except for me :help: ) would support $10 guppies, no matter how pretty!

BTW...all 3 guppies looking good this morning!:thumb:

Even I got some of the ones with the yellow-black tails. Its around 0.5$ a pair out here.

01-28-2008, 03:53 PM
LOL...well, I do have friends in India...but it's a bit far for me to go shopping!:hmm3grin2orange:

01-28-2008, 03:57 PM
lol, get them fedexed.

Fancies are $2-6 here, but I really don't see why they are that expensive! They breed like rabbits on fertility drugs X10. They are in such high demand though I guess they can charge whatever.
Some of the nicer snakeskin ones can go for $6 here but that's about the max.

01-28-2008, 04:14 PM
Well, this is Petland...I don't know how they get away charging so much more than other stores and still stay in business.

I don't mind paying more for a quality product, but this is beyond reasonable.

Their bulk-bin budgies as $40. Petsmart charges $25.

They do have the cutest baby tortoises for sale at the moment...if you have a spare $800...:1luvu:

01-28-2008, 04:19 PM
Wow that is really steep. A pair of fancy (male and female) here cost $5.99.

01-28-2008, 05:47 PM
Petland is definelty the most expensive, I only go there for SW products that aren't at petsmart.
I my my budgies for $20 each.
$800 for a tortoise? that would be cool though, as long as they don't grow too big.

01-28-2008, 06:03 PM
No, most tortoises grow large...and even if they're smaller ones...they need a LOT of room to roam...

02-03-2008, 03:41 AM
I'd say buy a trio or buy a male and mate him with some females you kind of like and grow your own. Hmmm.... I wonder if I could get them to sell my baby mollies for $10 and get some of the proceeds.....

02-03-2008, 05:17 AM
...but I don't want to breed them! LOL...that's why I'm just getting males!

I've been looking since I got the other 3...lots of guppies to be had...but so few look robust and I'm still looking for some of the other colours I know are out there...

02-08-2008, 02:58 AM
I looked last night and guppies here (central OH) ranged from $1.43 for females to $2.99 for fancy males.
